Southerndown Gryphea
Gryphea
The Southerndown beach has lots of small rockpools where the
" Devil's toenails " are easy to find.
Those which have the best detail were prised from the rocks at the opposite side of the beach.
Those we found in the pools have a purple hue when wet, which
really shows off the whorl patterning on the fossil. The group above have been
coated with a thin layer of PVA glue to try to show this off.
The pale coloured specimen below is a slipper limpet (Crepidula fornicata), found in exactly the same location
and bears remarkable similarity to the Gryphea fossil alongside.
Thanks to Richard for the identification.
