| Bishounen |
| There's a lot of confusion over what a bishounen is. Some sites (e.g. Pocket Bishounen) have 'badges'. That is when one can collect pictures of bishounen and bishoujo and keep them on their sites. But just about any anime character seems to fall under these catagories according to them. Which is WRONG. A bishounen is as follows... They must have at least three of these characteristics: 1. Long hair (not always neccessary) or beautiful hair, for example it must be in a ludicrously preened style, or have 'shine marks'. 2. Feminine features; eyelashes, pointed chin rather than a square jaw. 3. Slight muscle; they must not look overly muscley like Rambo (Rambo), or under muscley like Screech (Saved by the Bell). 4. Voice should be soft and sincere. Bishounen: James (Pokemon), Allen Schezar (Vision of Escaflowne), Spike (Cowboy Bebop), Fred (Outlaw Star) Mistaken Bishounen: Anyone from DB/Z/GT (they seriously have them down as Bishounen!) - because they are muscley, spikey-haired, unfeminine deep voiced idiots (despite their hotness ^_^); Brock (Pokemon) - although he is very cute, his chin isn't feminine, his voice is fairly deep for his age and his hair is average; Van (Vision of Escaflowne) - he doesn't do enough with his hair and he's scrawny (I do love him besides that ^_^); Jet (Cowboy Bebop) - one of my favourite characters on Cowboy Bebop, but he's not girly enough to be a bishounen. So a character doesn't necessarily have to be ugly or brute to not achieve the bishounen title. They just don't quite have the right stuff. |
