"We had to work hard, from 7 o'clock in the morning to 4 o'clock in the afternoon - but I have happy memories of that time.
In the morning there was a lot of washing up from the breakfast trolleys. Then we had to make sure the wards were hoovered and polished before the Doctor did his rounds. It was hard work polishing and waxing the wood block floors but they were very nice when they were done.
In the Labour Ward and the nurseries the cleaners had to wear a white gown and a mask to clean the floors. They had to scrub the white lino floor on their knees. Miss Arnold was very strict about cleanliness.
We used to have to work on Christmas Day but I didn't mind. The
doctors dressed up as Father Christmas and it was very nice. They
were happy days - I didn't mind going to work."
