The Barb is a native of North Africa and has long been associated with Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia - which make up an area called the Barbary coast.
A lively but elegant riding horse, the Barb is also capable of speed and endurance - qualities which are seen at their best in festivals such as the North African fantasias. Barbs were once used as cavalry mounts because of their bravery and quick movement.
Most famous European breeds can trace their origins back to the hot-blooded Barb - the best-known being the Andalusian from Spain.

APPEARANCE.
The Barb has a straight profile and a broad muzzle. The shoulders are flat, and the chest is rounded. The hindquarters are sloping, and the legs are long and strong. Its mane and tail hair is plentiful.

14hh to 15hh.

COLOUR.
Bay, brown, chestnut, black or grey.

PERSONALITY.
The Barb is sure footed, tough and enduring over long distances, as well as being quite fast over short distances. It is an undemanding and reliable animal, despite having a spirited temper.
