Interim Report...
10:30 Starting in a light snow shower, Hook got off to a convincing start. This game was marked by players taking time, looking for space and who to pass to, and passing accurately.
10:33 Will E shot on goal.
10:34 Good save by David B, back as goalie.
10:38 Will E x to Ben M, saved by Crookham goalie.
10:42 Plenty of action in Crookham's penalty area, with attempts from Will E, Ben M and Jamie B.
10:44 Lovely run up field by Ben M with a shot, which just ran out of steam.
10:45 0-1, good goal from Crookham slipped through our defence.
10:45 Great playing, good attempt on goal by Ollie C.
10:48 Crookham shot just wide.
10:49 Will E equalises 1-1, with a ball picked up from great passing from Jamie B then Ben M.
10:51 Ben M makes it 2-1 after a great cross.
10:53 Ollie C and Will E both have shots on goal.
10:54 1/2 time, George H off and Oliver W on.
10:58 KO, good attempt by Jamie B hits side netting.
10:59 Great cross from Oliver W into goal mouth picked up by Ben M, who took his time, picked his spot and cooly tapped it past the keeper! 3-1.
11:01 Jamie B turned, hit, just clipped the post.
11:04 Crookham change goalie, unnoticed by supporters who wonder what the hiatus is! Sam C off, Martin P on.
11:05 Great tackle by Martin P, passed to Will E who picked it up, shot just saved by keeper.
11:08 Martin P kept running with ball, urged by all to pass to Will E or Ben M but wisely ignored all advice, took his shot which sailed in to make it 4-1!
11:09 Crookham pulled one back, 4-2, after defence had a momentary lapse.
11:10 5-2 with a great goal from Ben M.
11:11 Will E ran down almost the length of the pitch, again everyone said pass but he aimed carefully and scored a cracker, making it 6-2.
11:12 Jamie B turned and kicked, just not quite enough power to get it past keeper.
11:13 Ben M pirouetted, ball ran parallel to goal line and keeper just cleared it.
11:14 Good try by Will E, defence just blocked.
11:15 Ollie C sailed ball over keeper's head to make it 7-2. Superb shot.
11:16 Ben M scores another great goal to make it 8-2.
11:17 Good run by Ben M, defence closed down his turn.
11:18 Good play in Crookham's penalty box, not quite able to make it 9-2.
11:19 David B, who had a relatively quiet match, makes another convincing save.
11:20 Final whistle. 8-2, Jamie B man of the match.

Match postponed due to snow.

Match postponed

After a week off due to bad weather the team were anxious to get back to their football and extend the Tigers unbeaten run. Arrival at the Hawley ground revealed some surprises; there are not too many football pitches with mole hills, and the length of the grass was clearly not going to favour the Tigers passing game!

From the start it was obvious that the Hawley number 9 was going to be the danger man, and despite some brave defending from Harry Barnard and Joe Lockey the Tigers were 3 goals down in the first 10 minutes. However, I am still not sure that the first goal crossed the line and the referee took the unusual step of canvassing the players on the pitch for some advice!

The first half then seemed to drag, probably due to the referees stop watch not working correctly and the first half ran to 25 minutes: he did apologise after the game!

The half time break gave us the opportunity to reorganise the team and the remainder of the match was a different story. Ed Mahoney, goalkeeper for the second half was unlucky with the only goal of the half from Hawley; Tom Baines provided his usual commitment up front and William Likely played his first game of the season and put in some great challenges. Man of the Match this week went to Aaron Simpson. Aaron came on for the second half and his all-round play was exceptional.

Towards the end the Hawley boys were getting frustrated with the Tigers improved performance which culminated in a ‘Kieren Dyer / Lee Bowyer’ type clash within the home side, but the attitude and conduct of the Tigers was exemplary.

So, end of the unbeaten run, every game the team are learning, including the coaching staff and a hand back to Ian after his two weeks away on the FA coaching course. We are looking for some of that new found knowledge to help get us back to winning ways.

Forget the scoreline, this was a fantastic effort by the boys, and arguably the Lions best and most encouraging performance of the season so far. Playing "tactically" up the dreaded slope in the first half against what seemed like an Alton team of goliath U8s, the Lions worked really hard defending and moving the ball up the field.

The Lions back three of Ollie Charlton, Luke Collinson and Sam Cowle impressed throughout the game and produced some solid defence and worked hard feeding the ball forward. David Bland played his normal committed game and made a number of good saves, bravely coming out well into his penalty area on a couple of occasions to block and capture the ball from the Alton attackers. Also Jamie Blackman threatened the Alton defence and goal area on a number of occasions during the first half.

This week's Lions Captain, Ben Newton produced another fine performance, keep up the good work Ben! Additionally, our two subs this week, Martin Povey and Hamish Webb committed themselves well during the second half.

Man of the Match this week went to William Estlea for his excellent challenging, moving and passing of the ball throughout the game. Well-done William!

The only let down of this match was the Lions Manager who forgot to bring the half time secret weapon "Jaffa Cakes". Must do better please! Overall, a tremendous effort by the whole Lions Squad, big "well done" boys! And thanks as always to the parents and family members for their continued and encouraging support.

After a week's break the Tigers returned to put in their best team performance this season to secure a 2-0 win over the Blades. We're now on an unbeaten run of 3 games and are really beginning to play well as a team - indeed I even witnessed some running backwards, good passing and good defending at corners - spooky!

Playing uphill in the first half on a very muddy surface (confirmed when the manager fell over during the pre-match warm up!), the Tigers dominated possession and could have scored 3 or 4 goals but had to do with a solitary effort from this week's "Man of the Match" Louie Paget. Apart from one great save, Ed probably had time to do his homework whilst in goal for the first half! The second half was more even but we always looked the more likely to score and Louie Paget scored his second goal of the match to wrap up a well deserved win. Harry Warner took over in goal in the second half and made a couple of brave saves to prevent the Blades getting back into the game. And Harvey Williams came on and played the entire second half - good performance Harvey!

We've now played 8 games this season and have a good feel for the boy's best playing positions. In defence we have the tenacity and sheer energy of Louie Hyde and Dillon, combined with the slightly more cultured approach and measured style of Harry Barnard and Joe Lockey! Jack Heelan is adapting well to the Ledley King "holding" role (and probably doing a better job!) And we have a wealth of midfield and attacking options with Louie Paget, Tom, Ed, Harvey, Harry Warner and Jack Baldwin. Competition for places is hotting up - a good sign! Now all we have to work out is naming conventions for the two Louie's and two Harry's in the side to avoid confusion from the touchline - all suggestions welcomed!

On a slightly sadder note I have to report that the first "one match touchline speaking ban" has been dished out to Ed's dad. Whilst this is unfortunate, it became necessary after seeing Ed totally confused for a period in the second half as to whether he should be playing the "Michael Owen" role up front or the "Steven Gerrard" in midfield! Unfortunately there is no appeal process in place!

In summary a fantastic performance and our confidence is now building every week - keep it up Tigers!

Hook Lions    3 Rushmoor Community    0 Hook Tigers     No match today
On Saturday, with the weather surprisingly better than forecast, the returning Steve and Simon with the vital support of Mark Charlton, led the Lions into battle against Rushmoor Community. After electing to play up the legendary Hook ski slope, the Lions took an early lead through a great goal from Jamie. The game was evenly balanced throughout the first half with the Lion's back three of Luke, Oliver C and George repelling all attempts. The strong defensive performance was enhanced by tireless support from William and Ben. As the first half came to a close the Lions surged forward and Oliver thundered the ball in off the post to enable the Lions to finish the first half 2 goals ahead.

The second half saw a re-invigorated Rushmoor try their best to claw back the deficit coming close on a number of occasions only thwarted by David in goal, once more delivering an outstanding display of goalkeeping. Jamie again leading a Lions attack, struck the ball beautifully and watched it rocket in to the top of the goal - 3 nil to the Lions. Sam and Oliver Woollard joined the game with Sam commanding the right hand side of our defence, and Oliver W protecting our left. The final whistle was greeted with cheers from all.

As now expected, the Lions supporters screamed their hearts out for the full 40 minutes encouraging the side as we surged forward, and ooooooing and aaarrring as Rushmore attacked. For the coaching staff the most rewarding aspects was achieving our first defensive clean sheet and recording our second victory. Well done to Ben who was voted by all as our Man of the Match for his tireless commitment to attack and defence.

There was no game for the Tigers squad last Saturday although we held a training session to hone up some of our developing skills. Over the last week we have learned how to run backwards (and not turn our backs on the opposition), and how to defend a corner. I look forward to seeing the players put this into practice in a match situation!

There was also an impromptu Dads vs Kids game at the end of the session as a number of the dads enthusiastically stepped forward to demonstrate some of the skills that the professional game sadly misses today. To be honest it was hard enough just standing upright on a slippery pitch, and Corrie Barnard was an early victim as he went over under NO challenge whatsoever. There was no mercy shown to the Tigers U8s players as the dads turned the clock back many, many years to record a 1-0 victory, the goal coming from Asst. Mgr. Mark Heelan. The boys put up a good show and were nearly rewarded with an equaliser in the last minute but Tom Baines couldn’t get the ball past his own dad!

I can feel a Tigers dads vs Lions dads challenge match coming up at the end of season - the question is - are the Lions dads up for it?

Haslemere    9 Hook Lions    0 Hook Tigers    3 Ludwig B Gladiators    3
The first challenge on Saturday was the epic journey down to Halsemere and finding the pitch, but thanks to some pre-planning of printed maps and directions we found the ground, and had a warm welcome from the Haslemere club.

"You can’t win them all" was the general consensus from the touch line on Saturday. We knew we had a tough game on our hands as Haslemere scored their first goal, and David Bland had to make two "goal scoring" saves within the first minute of the match!

But forgetting the score line, the boys put up a spirited performance and worked hard throughout the whole game against a very good and skilful team who have been playing together since they were U7s. On a positive note, the Lions defended well and gave a good account of themselves marking and challenging their opposing players.

Man of the match went to this weeks Lions Captain David Bland for his outstanding goal keeping, as without him the score line might well have been into double figures.

Thanks again to the parents and family members who not only keep on supporting and encouraging the boys throughout but also for enduring the journey to Haslemere and back. At least the route was scenic!
A big crowd on Saturday were treated to a very entertaining game between the Tigers and Ludwig Gladiators, a team who had won all but one of their previous games. Twice in the game the Tigers had to come from behind, and we thoroughly deserved at least a draw - indeed we finished the stronger team and had two or three shots whistle past the Ludwig post in the last 10 minutes!

A slightly nervous Harry Barnard played in goal in the first half and did extremely well - well done Harry! Our goals this week came from Louie Paget (our recent, and very promising, free transfer signing), Tom (Mr Consistent) Baines, and a first goal of the season from Aaron Simpson (pull up your sleeves Aaron!) who scored the final equaliser with his left foot!

There was some strong, but fair(ish!), tackling from Louie Hyde, Dillon Shenton, and Jack Heelan who seemed to adopt a "they will not pass" attitude to defence! Jo Lockey and Harry Barnard kept up the good defensive work in the second half with a slightly less aggressive, but nonetheless effective, display.

Harry Warner made one important save in the second half to keep the score at 3-3, but overall it was a fantastic performance by all the boys!

Man of the match went to Tom Baines who put in a great all round performance and probably spent the afternoon sleeping after all the running he did - well done Tom!

Whatever happened, we were determined to kick 'up' the dreaded hill in the first half, and it very nearly didn't happen at all - a no-show from the referee threatened to spoil the proceedings, until Chris (Sam's dad) Cowle virtually ripped the whistle from my grasp and tossing his comfy blanket and flask aside, insisted to be put into the much-maligned role.

The boys were all dressed for action, sporting their fine, new shirts (OK, I apologise for suggesting that Ian Warner scarpered off to Dubai with our kit money). Sam Cowle, impressing the week before, started at the heart of the defence alongside the ever dependable Luke Collinson & Oliver Woollard, together with the return of David Bland in goal. This allowed us to experiment by pushing Oliver Charlton forward to support Wills Estlea & Captain Jamie Blackman. Great passing and the disciplined shape of the whole team put us in an early commanding position, with Jamie Blackman hitting the bar after just 3 minutes. 5 minutes later Jamie Blackman fired in a superb left foot drive to give us the lead - UP-HILL!!!

The Rushmoor equaliser came shortly after and with sub Anthony Scregg returning to the side, we got to half-time at 1 - 1.

Many thanks to our SAS team (Steve & Simon) for leaking the sustinence advice from FAHQ, about the half-time Jaffa Cakes & setting us up nicely for the 2nd half. George Hingston was introduced and impressed again and David Bland started brightly, making a brilliant early save. A very tight contest developed but the expectation of the downhill charge didn't quite come off, and the final whistle came giving us a well-deserved draw.

Man-of-the-match: David Bland - a superb goal-keeping display and fine encouragement to his superb defence.

Superb support from the crowd as always. Fine effort from John (Motty) Estlea, assisting with much needed match report notes, not to mention the superb web-site work - details to follow. Kirsty's chuffed she hasn't got to wash the shirts anymore, so am I - gives her time to crack on with the ironing!! Once again thanks to Chris (Pierluigi Collina) Cowell, who even turned the £10 ref's fee down. Bring your black shirt again next week pal, but practice blowing that whistle!!!

By all, Dave Webb & I are going for therapy. By the way, where on earth is Haslemere?!? [Ed's note - the map for Haslemere is on the Lions Fixtures page]
A game that Hook Tigers dominated throughout but could not get the ball into the back of the net!

After a hard training session from the team on Wedneday I thought that I needed some training myself, so Thursday night I watched "Mike Bassett: Manager" and that provided all the inspiration I required for my first match in charge.

The new kit arrived in time for the game and the team looked magnificent in their new strip. Although the result was disappointing, the approach and style of play the team adopted was most encouraging. The overall performance could not be faulted, supported by a fine contribution in defence from Harry Barnard and Joe Lockey, a superb debut from Louie Paget, and the Man of the Match award was to Ed Mahoney for his tireless effort in both attack and defence. The goal keeping duty was split between Tom Baines and Jack Heelan; both had a quiet time watching the grass grow.

A change in tactics (Twix at full time rather than half time) did not have the desired impact, however, if the team continues to play in the same fashion the results will surely follow: bring on the next game!

Forget the scoreline, this was a spirited performance by the Lions, and I have nothing but admiration for the whole team whose effort was nothing short of outstanding.

We were let down by a slow start, going 3 - 0 down in the first 10 minutes, and had it not been for some fine goalkeeping by debutant Martin Povey, and defending by Ollie (I love slide tackling daddy) Charlton, Luke (Captain Marvel) Collinson, and Sam (wait till u see my 2nd half performance) Cowle, we would have been much worse off.

After about 15 minutes we started to get into the game and competed very well for the remaining 30 minutes - yes I'm not kidding, we played a 45 minute 1st half! Our forward players started to take control, notably Ben Newton demonstrating the importance of a forward closing the opposition defence down. Our determination was rewarded with a fine goal from Hamish (lovely forward roll celebration) Webb, pegging us back to 3 -1.

We introduced another new 'keeper for the 2nd half in the shape of Ben Newton, who matched Martin's brilliant performance. We lost Ollie Charlton through injury, but still took control, camping ourselves in the Ludwig half. Unfortunately, their big number 8 up front kept catching us on the break, and we conceded another, to go 4 -1 down.

Enter Sam Cowle who did the best man-marking job on the Ludwig danger man I've seen since Martin Keown in his heyday. Whilst Sam & Luke snuffed out the breaks, George (call me Claude Makelele) Hingston was given licence to push up and support the forwards, enabling William (the wing wizard) Estlea, Martin (the whippet) Povey, & Jamie Blackman to threaten. Ludwig were rattled and resorted to shirt pulling & pushing - all un-noticed by the ref, of course. Then, finally we were rewarded with a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Step forward Jamie (goal of the season?) Blackman who placed the ball in the top left corner with such precision that their 'keeper didn't even move.

We just couldn't make the possession count by finishing off some brilliant moves, and another break-away Ludwig goal settled the tie 5 - 2. Man of the match was so hard, all the boys played their hearts out. It had to go to Sam Cowle, for putting up with me shouting, 'get behind number 8 Sam', and sticking to the job admirably.

Amazing support from all the parents as usual, who I'm sure could see the tears in my eyes when Ludwig's 3rd goal went in, thank you friends!

Steve & Simon, please come back soon, I've think I've developed panic attacks!
It was "a game of two halves" for Hook Tigers on Saturday. In the first half we played up the famous Hook Junior School slope and allowed (and at times almost invited!) our opponents to score 4 goals despite some brave goalkeeping from Jack Heelan.

However the second half was a different matter. I'd like to think that it was the half-time team talk, but all the credit must go to the boys who put up a fantastic performance and scored the only goal of the half with a screamer of a free kick from Tom Baines (Jamie Blackman of the Lions squad will have stiff competition for goal of the season!)

It could have been more, particularly when Jack Heelan managed to "scoop" the ball over the bar from about 3 yds out - absolutely amazing skill Jack and I bet you £10 you couldn't do it again! Jack played out on pitch in the second half and set a fine example to the rest of the team with his tackling and all round play. With Louie back in his preferred position in defence and with the rest of the boys all making valuable contributions, Hook Tigers outplayed their opponents for large parts of the second half.

Joe Lockey returned to the team and played well. And there was a fine performance from Aaron Simpson who again showed some real promise.

Another bumper crowd turned out and provided strong encouragement - thanks! I'm off now for a rest to try and come up with some new training routines (and to come up with a winning strategy!) Please offer your support to Mark Heelan for Saturday's match.

It must first be reported, the score line didn't reflect the Lions effort on Saturday. The squad put up a spirited performance and are really starting to play together as a team. It was that second half that beat us again. However we should report that we did win the first half 2-1!

We started the match well with some good team work which resulted in two excellent goals from Ollie Charlton and William Estlea. We think the training and coaching is really beginnning to rub off on the squad because the boys are actually starting to produce some accurate passing, noticeably on Saturday from Luke Collinson, Sam Cowle and William Estlea. That's encouraging stuff for the Lions coaching team!

In the second half playing up hill, our positioning and defence faltered at times allowing the visiting side to goals three goals. However the team did work hard during this half with Martin Povey and Oliver Wollard winning some good challenges on the ball and gaining good possession for the team. Finally the parents did a sterling job again providing that all important support and encouragement during the game.
On a day when the highly paid "stars" of English football failed to impress, Hook Tigers (who play for nothing except the love of the game, and a Twix bar) provided hope for the future by recording a thoroughly deserved first win of the season. Despite going a goal down midway through the first half, the Tigers roared back with two goals from Tom Baines (sorry Tom but I missed the first one - what was it like?) and a 25yd (!) screamer from Louie Hyde.

Harvey Williams made his first appearance for the team and we also "blooded" two new goalkeepers, Jack Heelan and Ed Mahoney. All three played well. Harry Warner made his long awaited (at least it felt that way with after all the nagging I’ve had from him!) debut on pitch.

Overall we defended much better with Harry Barnard, Dillon Shenton, and Louie Hyde all making plenty of tackles and "clearing their lines" well! Keep it up (sounds too much like a school report - apologies!) We also started to pass the ball better which was very pleasing and encouraging.

As the final whistle went, the look on the boys’ faces said it all. There was also enormous relief for the manager with his first win of what could have been a very short managerial career! Look out Sven!

Newsletter number 3 and we have our first win of the season (see report below)! The boys also had their first experience of a "Twix" bar at half time - whatever happened to a slice of orange! Times have changed!

WOW! Our second match of the season and what a great first win! Another big "well done" to the whole Lions squad who played their hearts out and led throughout the game. The Lions took the lead within the first minute or so with a great opening goal from William (the goal conqueror) Estlea, which was shortly followed by two well worked goals from Jamie Blackman and Ollie Charlton. The team continued to play well throughout the first half with William Estlea adding another two goals to the score board before half time.

With the squad refuelled at half time with the secret weapon 'Twix" bars, the team, through their ever improving passing and positioning, supported William Estlea who scored another "four" great goals before the final whistle. Mention should be made to Oliver Charlton, Sam Cowle, Ben Newton and Luke Collinson who gained good possession, and provided some good running and tackling throughout the match. Also the goal-keeper George Hingston, who discovered his goal kicking right foot.

Two new players; Hamish Webb and Oliver Wollard made their debuts and now have some good match experience. Finally, thanks again to the parents who provided that all important support and encouragement during the game.
Despite the scoreline, the Tigers put up a spirited display and showed a great attitude and plenty of effort. We were playing against the Ludwig "A" team and the boys performed extremely well to get back to 2-1 early in the second half against a very strong side. The main highlights from the game were a fantastic save in the first half by Harry Warner from a free kick (unfortunately for me Harry hasn't stopped talking about it all week!), and a great goal on his Tigers debut from Ed Mahoney. I'm sure (& hope) Ed will go on to score many more goals for us during the season.

The positive attitude of the team was typified by Louie Hyde who ran his heart out in the first half and then didn't want to come off at half-time when we were introducing our subs into the game. There was lots of good tackling by all the boys and early signs of some passing (maybe they do listen at training!) Having had the newly introduced 'Twix" bar at half-time, the boys were then offered more sweets at full-time by the Ludwig team (can't be bad!) Despite the defeat the boys are clearly enjoying their football - however the pressure's building on their manager - hopefully I won't be given the dreaded vote of confidence by the Hook United board! Fantastic (& loud) support again from the parents, and also thanks to Jack Baldwin and Harvey Williams for coming along to watch the rest of their team (great poster Jack!)

Hook Lions    1 Beacon Hill    4 Headley Youth    3 Hook Tigers    0
This was the first friendly match of the season for the newly formed Lions Squad. Firstly, a big well done to the whole squad who put up a praiseworthy performance against a well disciplined and accomplished team who had already played three matches this season.

We played downhill on the Hartlett’s Park pitch in the first half and although we made a slow and nervous start and went a goal down, we started to build our confidence in working together as a team. Just before half time, after must pressure in their goal area from particularly Jamie Blackman, Oliver Charlton and Ben Newton, William Estlea maintained his 100% record by scoring a well deserved equaliser.

In the second half, in spite of some fine goal keeping by David Bland and solid defending by Oliver Charlton, the visiting side managed to breakthrough our tiring defence and scored three goals.

Although we lost our first game, this was a good first performance together as a team and a positive start to our season. Finally, thanks to the parents who provided great support on Saturday and cheered the boys on throughout the whole game.
"An injustice!", "How did the ball not go in?", "So unlucky!" - just some of the comments heard from the crowd about our game with Headley Youth. Despite losing 3-0, the Headley goal led a charmed life for large parts of the game. Overall the team played extremely well and deserved a better result.

Three new players made their debuts - Reece (could he be the future answer to England’s left sided midfield problem) Holes, Joe (Mr Drag Back) Lockey, and Aaron (the baby of the squad but a great prospect) Simpson.

Again we saw some great defending especially from Dillon Shenton and Louie Hyde. The game was summed up when, deep in the second half, Jack Heelan dribbled past two players and then saw his shot beat the keeper but narrowly go past the post! A great effort!

All the team put in a tremendous effort and I’m sure the goals (and wins) will come soon. And one day we might get a "kick-off" right! Thanks again to the parents for your support.
