So What's it all
about?
The New Grey-eres Quartet comprises of "Jim Walsh"
(tenor), retired chemical worker. "Mike Twigg" (bass), retired postman.
"Des Donoghue" (lead) and "Harry Cureton" (baritone), Des and Harry worked
for the Merseyside Port Authority as Transport Supt' and General Supt'
respectivley before retirement.
The Quartet in it's present form started in the summer of 1998. Since
then they have sung at many events and concerts to help raise money for
charity. The Quartet have also supported the Macmillan Nurses, who are
grateful for their support. The Grey-eres are also pleased to be members
of the Fazackerly Hospital (Liverpool), Volunteer Group. They are often
heard singing around the wards.
They have entered Music Festivals in Liverpool and Crosby, winning 1st
prizes one with distinction. Masonics, Rotarys and old folks clubs feature
in their singing venues. Their repertoire includes songs whose titles date
back to the late 1800's (bit like them really).
The New Grey-eres look forward to whatever challenges the year 2000 may
bring....
Barbershop in a Nutshell
Barbershop is a form of four part "A CAPPELLA" ie no accompaniment. Des
the lead sings the melody, Jim puts on tight trousers and sings the tenor
part (bit squeaky this part). The bass sung by Mike stays close to the
root of the chord and he has big boots. Harry is just there to make up the
numbers and fills in the bits the others can't manage, usually between the
lead and bass, even above the lead sometimes, so Harry always carries a
spare pair of very tight trousers for just such an occasion. So baritones
are clever, but somewhat eccentric and a touch bonkers. So there you have
it you now know as much about Barbershop Harmony as me.
