GNS Character Profiles - Dr Frasier Crane

 Characters - Frasier Crane

Dr Frasier Winslow Crane is the main character of the show. He is pompous, snobbish and conceited but his heart is in the right place and he'll do anything to help his friends and family. It's just that the methods he uses aren't always what you'd expect.

Frasier lives at 1901 Elliot Bay Towers, Seattle, together with Daphne, Martin and Eddie. It is a stylish apartment with paintings and sculptures - which Frasier likes - as part of the décor. It's said that a house defines a character - in Frasier's case this is probably true.

Frasier hosts a phone-in radio show on KACL 780AM every afternoon from 2pm - 5pm. His producer Roz assists him in this. Frasier is a celebrity in Seattle because of this. His catchphrase is "I'm listening". He gets plenty of people call in wanting his answers to their problems - from the emotional to the totally insane.

Frasier does have problems of his own - such as his relationship with father Martin. They are as different as chalk-and-cheese, and had many big arguments in the past (after one over the phone in an episode of Cheers he told bartender Sam Malone that his father was dead!). However they are working to try and better their relationship. Both want to do so, but both try too hard and often don't get anywhere. Frasier (and indeed Niles) definitely takes after his mother, the late Dr Hester Crane.

Frasier graduated from Harvard University, Boston with Honours in Psychosocial Behaviourism. He did his undergraduate work at Oxford. His speciality is adult relations. Frasier is also the author of more than 27 magazine articles - including one for Redbook entitled- "Psychotherapy: Is It For You?" He obviously stayed in Boston because he soon started becoming a regular at a Boston bar named Cheers - first arriving there when his girlfriend Diane Chambers introduced him to the bar after he had just divorced first wife Nanette. Diane dumped him at the altar, but Frasier stayed at Cheers - pleased to finally have some real friends. Later Frasier married second wife Dr Lilith Sternin and had a son, Frederick Crane.

After many years of marriage to Lilith Frasier discovered she was having an affair. After his marriage ended he left Boston and moved back to his hometown of Seattle, where he reacquainted himself with his family.

Frasier was forty-one years old during the first season, and this year (2001) he will turn 49, as he was born in 1952. He is into opera, fine arts and detests sports and flu shots (he recited operas during his shots when he was a boy to distract him from thinking about them - Frasier is terrified of shots). He can also speak fluent Spanish and can play the piano (in fact he had an affair with his piano teacher when he was 18!!!) as well as the clarinet and chess.

Frasier helped Niles and Daphne get together before Daphne's wedding by telling them how they felt about each other. This led to Daphne leaving her fiancé Donny for Niles, and caused Donny to sue Daphne and Frasier after finding out how he was involved.

Frasier's "usual" at Café Nervosa is a double kona with cream. Other favourite coffees include a Kenya Blend from Starbucks. He has also written 27 magazine articles about psychiatry. His IQ is 129 (27 lower than Niles).

Frasier Crane is played by Kelsey Grammer. He first appeared in Ep 1 "The Good Son".
