GeogOnline... Ice Ages
 Click to Go Back
The Ice Age is in itself a high energy event where ice gradually advances over much of the earth's surface.  We have  discussed various theories as to why this cooling occurred. The series of warmer interglacials and cold glacial episodes represent a sequence of lower and higher energy events each lasting tens of thousands of years. However, the time scale is probably too great for our purposes and so we will concentrate on shorter high energy episodes.
The impressive landforms of the North Wales and the Lake District are a testament of the power of the ice. Glacial landforms still dominate in these areas some 12000 years after the ice last retreated. Remember with this topic we have historically glaciated regions and current actively glaciated areas.
