At these times we seem to find great difficulty in expressing our true feelings about death and the funeral never seems the right place... There is a natural desire to either reach out to the bereaved or to stand away from them completely - they have become part of a seeming taboo, an unexplorable region that we are not yet ready to enter. We utter what now sound like clichés and are overcome with feelings of helplessness. We struggle with the "me too" factor and a sense of relief that it isn't affecting us.

It must be such a relief.

Now you can make a fresh start.

I'm so sorry.

I just feel so helpless.

Now you can get on with your life.

I know exactly how you feel.

We're all thinking of you.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

We offer our deepest sympathy.

It was probably for the best.

If only.......

Of course we mean well, we try and offer a helping hand. We really do want to express our empathy. But that feeling of helplessness, what can we do?
