WELCOME TO FILEY ALLOTMENTS
FILEY ALLOTMENTS & GARDEN ASSOCIATION
FORWARD
by the chairman of Filey Allotments & Garden Association
The Filey Allotment Association has been in existence for a great many years. Within recent times, however it merged with the Garden Association and has become one of the largest organizations in the area.
Gardening must surely be listed as one of the most fascinating hobbies of all time, with new and absorbing features being discovered almost weekly. The enormous interest shared by so many people in and around Filey is apparent by the large number of members registering with our Association each year, and it is our intention to share this interest as widely as possible.
Apart from the 3 Annual Shows given by our members, it is hoped to plan talks by specialists during the winter months. The Association welcomes all new members and is open to new ideas and suggestions.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking All Members and Sponsors for the time and effort they are prepared to give when presenting their exhibits at the ANNUAL SHOWS also to the judges for there dedication and support.
FILEY ALLOTMENTS are situated on MUSTON ROAD FILEY just before the railway station. We have 116 plots all of which are let at the present moment. We have a waiting list for plots, if we don't have any one wanting a plot then anyone who wishes to take an extra plot can.
Our rents for these plots are £7 per year which includes a charge for water. We don't allow hosepipes to be used to water the gardens but you can use a pipe to fill your tubs or baths etc. When a new tenant takes on a plot they are asked to submit a plan if they wish to erect a greenhouse or shed, if no shed or greenhouse already exist on the plot.We have this rule so that no sheds or greenhouses are built to make the site look untidy.Over the last few years we have managed to clear a lot of sheds that made the site look untidy as the plots have become vacant.
ALL tenants agree to keep their plots in a tidy condition and cause no problems for their neighbours. If this agreement is broken at any time the allotment secretary will have a quiet word, should no response be taken by the plot holder then a written warning is given. They are given a period of time to make good to their plot, but if no further response is taken then they are served notice to quit and the plot is relet.
On our site we have a trading hut where we can buy a variety of garden goods. On sale we have a range of composts & fertilizers plus lawn foods and seeds all at discount prices. Any person can become a member of the association for a fee of £1 per year, this then entitles them to purchase any goods that they want from our store.
Each year we have a competition for the best plot which is split into two categories,1 for small plots (any person who only has one plot) and 1 for large plots (someone who has 2 or more plots),with a trophy for both winners plus a voucher. The second and third places also recieve a voucher to spend in our shop. This competition is judged twice in the year around about MAY and JULY, no warning is given to anybody when judging will be. As we have a lot of retired plot holders we find that this is the best way to deal with judging as we have some people who can only get to their plot on a weekend and it would be a disadvantage for them to compete on a fair basis.
Mainly our plot holders grow their vegetables & flowers for home use, but we have a few who like to show their produce at our local shows. We also have our other helpers down on our Allotments, last year we had a FOX who set up residence in the bank at the lower end and presented us with a family of 3 cubs which have all since left us.
Some plot holders are also dog owners which we allow as long as they are kept under control and keep all areas clean. My own dog is called BARBIE who has a lot of friends and gets lots of treats and is spoilt. She is now 12 years old.Barbie is also our rodent officer
Our site is owned by the FILEY TOWN COUNCIL,we rent the site from the council and and run it ourselves.Included in our rent agreement with the council we also undertake to look after a boundary hedge and ditch. The opposite side to the allotments runs along side the railway, this fence is maintained by them.We have a good working relationship with our local council who over the years have given us a lot of help with various projects & sponsorship for our shows.
