Name: Paul Mason
Gender: Male
Country: England
Political Persuasion: I am very cynical about all political
organisations: I believe in a federal Europe of regions, where national
power is reduced. I would like to see dramatic reform of the European
instituations to make democratic and financial acountable.
Most Respected European Politicians: Position unfilled. I need
someone who'll give me a vision of the future.
Good Causes Supported: Scope, Developing projects to support community
groups and the Over 45s.
Favourite Euro-Films: A Man and a Woman. French films. Have a
fondness for 'Carry On' which was the English film industry for many years.
Trainspotting.
Favourite TV shows: Bilko, The Bill, Simpsons, EuroTrash, Understated,
unsentimental historical documentories eg Channel 4 Untold History: Slave
Trade and BBC2 War of the Century, about the German Russian campaign.
Favourite Music: Sixties stuff - I was there, George Harrison trod on
my foot once, Blues, Brass Bands - from my youth in pit villages, like the
Verve.
Favorite Music Artists:
Favourite Euro-Foods: Anywhere where I can sit and eat without hassle
and watch the world go by, ideally with a river or the sea view.
Favourite Euro-Drinks: My most memorable drink in Europe was in
Jersey, where I wnet on a Pernod crawl, with a French guy, he was talking
about manifestions - strikes, I thought he meant ghosts. A few hours later
we ended up in a rurual pub where I ended up teaching some of the older
Breton farm workers, most without their own teeth, English chat up lines,
which the Australian barmaind found hilarious. The next day did not exist.
Other nice drinking events: A German wine bar, selling home wines, eg
rosehip, parsnip, all served in an odd assortment of cups, jugs and even
vases. Winetasting in an area called WineStrasse, by the end of the day I
was convinced I was a wine expert and was surprised the bext day by the
number of cases I had bought.
Favourite Pastimes/Hobbies: Sailing. theatre, stand up comedy, avoiding
the eye of the comedians, Edinburgh Festival, Internet and to prove I'm
totally sad I write science fiction.
What '1 Europe' mean to me: Since I hitched through Europe in the 1960s
I have always been excited by Europe. I like the idea that I can live and
work and Denmark, France or Spain, an be equal to a local citizen. I like
the diversity and I like the European sense of balancing the needs of
individual freedom with the needs of the community, which is the essential
difference being European and American.
'1 Europe' is an important to me. I believe that Britain is confused about its role in the world. Under Thatcherism it moved towards the American model, which I believe is not our natural way. I want us to move towards Europe. '1 Europe' gives me links with people who have a pro-European outlook.
Within the next month or so I'll be setting up a site or sites to promote my concept of Europe. I see '1 Europe' members giving me support, ideas and possibly telling me I'm completely mad, but in a nice civilised way.
Interestingly a lot of us have different perspectives of Europe, but we work
together - which is a thoroughly European attitude.
