Botanical Tours in Ethiopia

Desalegn Desissa

The flora of Ethiopia contains in the region of 4500 plant species with a large number of endemics. This unique flora is found in a variety of habitat types ranging from rain forest to desert in a landscape characterised by massive mountain ranges. The upland Ethiopia has been, in much of the country, severely impacted by humans for many centuries but large tracks of natural vegetation remain in some parts of Ethiopia. Elsewhere the landscape is dominated by unique traditional agricultural systems.

Desalegn Desissa organizes and leads expert botanical tours in Ethiopia. These tours not only focus on discovering the flora but also pay special attention to the relations between people, plants and their environment.

Botanical tours can be organised for various lengths of time to fit people's requirements. Typically tours will last around two weeks but much shorter trips can also be set up. Tourists who desire to discover Ethiopia's architectural and historical heritage as well as its natural history can also be accommodated.

Due to the poor nature of the road network and infrastructure in much of the country, travelling in Ethiopia can often be challenging. However, Desalegn Desissa's vast field experience and ability to speak a number of local languages will smooth your visit.

A typical two week tour will include:
  • discovery of a variety of vegetation types and associated flora, e.g. rainforest,  woodland and montane vegetation
  • visit of a National Park
  • climbing an extinct volcano protected as a sacred grove
  • investigate some of the unique agricultural systems used by a variety of Ethiopian tribes
  • look at current environmental issues
