AMMUT IS A DREADED UNDERWORLD GODDESS WHO PROMINENTLY FIGURES IN THE 'WEIGHING OF THE HEART' CEREMONY
She is ferocious to look at, with a crocodile head, a lion or leopard body and the hind legs of a hippopotamus. Her name means
'Devourer of the Dead'.
If a dead person is judged to be guilty by the Assessor Gods, then the person's heart is thrown to Ammut. She will eat it
up, thereby destroying any hope of an afterlife for the deceased. Egyptian 'Weighing of the Heart' scenes always show this
goddess, who constitutes the ultimate threat to eternal life, but she is of course always left hungry.
