The Arms of Sir John Kellaway of Hampshire
are described thus:
Argent two grozing irons saltire Sable between four pears Vert engrailed Sable; crest a cock Argent, beaked wattled and legged Azure.Similar arms are to be found throughout the south west of England, and provide a source of family information which is helping researchers to build a picture of the early family. The important features are 1. grozing irons in saltire (crossed) andGrozing irons are glazier’s nippers, tools used by glaziers to smooth off the edges of new glass. The pears seems to be associated with the very early family, possibly even with the Caillouets of Normandy. It is interesting that the Worshipful Company of Glaziers
and Painters of Glass, based in London has a very similar coat of arms.
We believe that the Kellaway form pre-dates

Godney church was restored in the Nineteenth Century. A Kellaway coat, clearly showing the grosing irons and the pears, and engrailed, has been inserted as if it were a restoration. It is of poor quality. Why is it there? |

née Tregarthin, "a virtuous and antient gentlewoman". "She was first
married unto John Kelleway, Esq., who had by her much issue". Later she
married John Wadham and their son Sir Nicholas founded Wadham College,
Oxford.
Joan died in 1583. Note that there are three family quarterings. Branscombe is between Sidmouth and Lyme Regis. |
