answers SOME ANSWERS TO THE QUIZ

Greetings from a Callaway descendant in Canada,
I would guess that James Kellaway was a collier in the rich mines of Northumberland,
which were probably at their peak producing coal, and therefore required much more
labour than the local population could provide.

The answer's obvious bonny lad - fed up with southern ale, James went off to try
Newcastle Broon Ale & married the barmaid!

[Perhaps I should explain to overseas readers that Geordies come from the
relevant area- and they drink brown beer! -Ed]

From David Scott
Miner or Mining many Devon/Cornwall miners went north for better results and
better wages?

From Martin King
Obviously Grace was an attractive young lady who stayed overnight at the Kellaway
B& B [Bed & Breakfast accommodation] on the outskirts of Tavistock in the early
1870s while exploring the outer reaches
of Victoria's realm during her Gap year. James took her to a hostelry in the town that
night, and when her furious father informed him some months later that his daughter
was pregnant and asked him what he was going to do about it, being a Kellaway he
decided to do the honourable thing and rode north to marry her.
I can't think of any other reason why anyone should want to go and live in
Northumberland!
I look forward to taking my prize in all the pubs in Staplehurst - and I am sure there
are quite a few - sometime in 2002.
