Memory Lane
My whippet addiction started when I was 21. I got my first whippet as a pup
after I'd been watching some locals racing their whippets on a Sunday close
by. It was all very exciting and I was keen to join in all the excitement
especially as it was all in fun and the dogs loved it so much. I found an
advert in my local paper advertising whippets for sale. I was lucky enough
to have a choice, although I didn't take long to choose my little gem. I
called her Belle. She had a good pedigree although I wasn't bothered about
that as I just wanted a nice whippet as a pet and to maybe race if she took
to it ok. I took her to the races every Sunday to get her used to the noise
and excitement. She had her first puppy race when she was six months old,
which she won. Her racing name was Skyline Pigeon. I raced her for two years
picking up many rosettes and a couple of trophies. She came forth at the only
away racing track she had ever been to. It was at Dosthill 70 miles away. I
really only went to watch my club run their dogs The Wilmslow Whippet Racing
Club. I entered Belle just for fun she was only 18months old and was
competing with much more experienced dogs that travelled and raced all over
the country. Belle ended up winning all her heats and ended up in the
final. She finished fourth out of four dogs but I was overwhelmed by her
success. The rest of the team didn't really do much in the heats so all eyes
were on my Skyline Pigeon. We came home with a nice trophy. When Belle was
two I'd started a family so Belle's racing stopped. I was given another
whippet who was also two from a friend who was moving away. I was very
grateful as it was a good companion for Belle. She was a fawn bitch about the
same size as Belle. They got on great. she was called Jessie. We had many holidays mainly camping . When Belle was eleven and half she developed cancerof the bowel and had to be put to sleep. It was a very sad time for the
family but our Jessie helped us through it.....
I hope you enjoyed reading about my whippet world as much as I enjoyed writing it.
