KERIKERI MISSION HOUSE

Rachel and I in front of the oldest building in the country, dating from 1822. 13/04/04

SUNSET OVER AUCKLAND

At 328 metres, the Sky Tower of Auckland, is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.  The views are amazing and we were lucky enough to get this sunset over Auckland. 15/04/04

MUD POOL AT TE WHAKAREWAREWA

Whakarewarewa is an extensive nature park with silica terraces, geysers, bubbling mud pools and boiling springs on the banks of the Puarenga River - about 2 kilometres from Rotorua.  18/04/04

BY MOUNT NGAURUHOE, 'MOUNT DOOM'

Richard and I did the 17 kilometre Tongariro Crossing, a trek past lava flows, an active crater and the beautiful Emerald Lakes.  Mount Ngauruhoe, behind me, was used as Mount Doom in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.  21/04/04

WITH RICHARD BY EMERALD LAKE

The colour of these lakes was amazing.  While walking over the Tongariro plains we felt like Frodo and Sam on their big adventure as this is where they filmed 'Morodor'.  21/04/04

KERIKERI RAINBOW FALLS

4 kilometres out of town, the Rainbow Falls were worth the walk! 13/04/04

MIXING WITH THE MAORIS

Rotorua is a traditional Maori settlement built around the volcanic ground where they now make a living showing tourists about.  They make use of the thermal activity and use their hot pools for cooking and bathing.  We had our picture taken at the end of the cultural show!  18/04/04

GEOTHERMAL ACTIVITY AT CRATERS OF THE MOON

Craters of the Moon is an aptly named wide valley pitted with steaming craters and pools.  We visited at dusk and it was quite spooky - great location for a sci-fi movie.  18/04/04

MOUNTS DOOM, TONGARIRO AND THE RED CRATER

The Tongariro Park consists of three major peaks - Mount  Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu.  There are still numerous craters, fumaroles, mud pools and hot springs on the northern slopes, indicators that at some point in the future, a fresh eruption could occur.  21/04/04

CABLE CAR IN WELLINGTON

We took this cable car up to the top for views over Wellington.  Then we walked down through the botanical gardens - all very pretty!!  23/04/04
