=============
At this point it might
help to tell a little about John Sparke the Adventurer.
John
Sparke was a Mariner who sailed out of Plymouth as a lieutenant on board the
ship of captain John Hawkins for at least two voyages of discovery and trade
the most profitable trade at that time was the slave trade John Sparke was a
man who liked to write about his adventures in journals he wrote.
Those
valuable records survive to this day accounts taken from them have been
published they give valuable Information on the people they encountered he
describes the tribes they captured the slaves from in some cases these
unfortunate people were traded to the white men by the tribal chiefs.
He wrote
descriptions of the animals that they found on their travels it was John Sparke
who coined many of the well known descriptions of people we use today for
instance he observed a crocodile with tears in its eyes feigning injury to
capture its intended victim he wrote in his book the description like a woman
shedding tears to have her own way (Crying Crocodile tears).
It was
John Sparke who first brought back an account of Tobacco and Potato’s as he was
friendly with Sir Walter Raliegh it was natural for him to tell Sir Walter Raliegh
of his find Sir Walter on his next voyage brought back samples thus he was
credited with their discovery.
An
amusing account on the Potato has been written about when Sir Walter Raliegh
brought back his sample he planted them in his garden when the crop was grown
he cut and cooked the green leaves of the plant they where foul so he abandoned
the idea.
But come
the following spring he once again dug over his garden and found in the process
the tubers of the potato he realised his mistake and presented his potatoes to
his Queen at court and also the tobacco he had brought home.
It was
on the second voyage with John Hawkins that they sailed in a ship belonging to
Queen Elizabeth the ship was the Jesus of lubeck of 700 tons another large ship
was under their command the General of the Solomons of 140 tons plus two
Barques the Tiger of 50 Tons and the Swallow of 30 tons the Earls of Pembroke
and Leicester were among the men who set out on this adventure this was in
1564.
In spite
of losing the two Barque’s confiscated by the Spanish with all their cargo and
slaves the investors of this trip made sixty percent profit on their
investments.
John
Sparke was also given the task of charting a trade route down the Volga to the
Caspian sea so he must have been a very trusted member of the sailing and trade
fraternity of Plymouth John Sparke was also one of three English men to escape
from Moscow when the Tarters sacked the city and again he is credited with
opening up a trade route from Novgorod for the Baltic trade then when he
retired from the sea he was mayor of Plymouth 1583-4 and again in 1591-2 a
truly remarkable man.
