My    Town    My    Home

Port Talbot evolved from the ancient Borough of Aberafan The name Aberafan when Tanslated means the mouth of the River and very aptly describes the ancient Borough as it sits at the mouth of the large river that runs from the upper valley's to the Sea. Once a very large Industrial and Prosperous town with steel coal mining copper iron tin plate Chemical works and busy Railway and Docks . Now only two of these major Industries survive but they are vastly reduced in size and production. WHAT is not realised by the Passing throng that speed pass on the mighty M4 Motorway is the sheer and wonderful Breath taking beauty of what lies hidden below them and what this ancient Borough has to offer both the young and old.

A    Welshmans    Lament

I don't like being called English
For that I am not
My homeland should not be called England
For that it is not My Homeland has a culture
a Language All of its own
Of its people and history has also been told
But people insist in spite of being told
In calling me English
Those I must Scold

I am in the proccess of tracing my family tree and have come across your site. I am the great great great granddaughter of William Cuthbert Barrass who was killed in the Morfa Colliery disaster of 1890. I had heard of the story from my Grandfather, Thomas Ernest Barrass before and was amazed to find this information on you site. My grandfather will be 91 this year and has asked me to look into his family tree for him. If you have any further information that could be of help to me I would be most grateful. If everything is correct we are most likely to be distantly related. If there is anyone else reading this that could also help, please could they get in touch via my email. isabeljsquirrell@hotmail.co.uk

With Kind Regards
Isabel

Good Morning

This year’s ninth fun filled Aberavon Beach Festival on Saturday 12th July 2008 has been in the planning stage since January. This event regularly attracts an estimated 5000 visitors annually. The Festival committee, made up of dedicated members of the local community, have been meeting fortnightly to plan and put in place the different attractions that will be available on the day. Amongst the attractions confirmed so far is a Punch and Judy show, Bouncy castle, five a side football and funfair for the children.

This year the committee have been lucky in being able, with the help of the Army and Air Force, to arrange a climbing wall, a rope slide. A very special event is the RAF TYPHOON*bleep*pit simulator. This will be based in the Apollo cinema car park and will enable visitors to experience first hand flying one of these planes in complete safety.

Two main attractions planned for the afternoon, with conditions permitting, are a drop, by the RAF Falcon Parachute Display Team, followed with a “fly past” by a Battle of Britain Lancaster bomber.

Throughout the day, the craft fair will be offering hand made items for sale. These include jewellery for children and adults, gifts and bags, aromatherapy, wooden toys, slate/wood pictures, coasters and fridge magnets, soap products, cards and decoupage, sewn household items and wood turning. If you are a knitter or artist wishing to sell your own goods, then our craft organiser would specifically like to hear from you.

Musically, the committee have tried to cover all tastes. Last year’s festival featured “Sticky Pig”. This year they have metamorphosed into the group “Rock Bottom”. Listeners who are aficionados of Floyd, Queen and Robbie Williams are particularly likely to enjoy this group’s eclectic style of music. The committee are also lucky to have secured agreement by the Cornelly Jazz Band to play their very own special brand of music. Other music will be supplied by the Gorseinon RAF Cadet Band, making a welcome return after their success last year. It is hopeful that a major choir will also be featured. The young musical artistes of Cultural Fusion Wales will also be a welcome attraction with their own particular kind of entertainment.

For those wanting something a little more sedate, there are the displays by both voluntary and public organisations with ties to the area.
These include, Cancer Challenge, Fans Social club, Keep Wales Tidy, Friends of the Hospital, Pension Service, CAB, Apostolic Church, Epilepsy Society, Seafarers Mission (great for book lovers) and many others. Also there will be demonstrations of woodcarving and belly dancing. Birds and guinea pigs will also be on display.

Locally, the Lifeboat and Coastguard groups will be giving demonstrations and the Swansea Bay Sea School have also agreed to take part. Other cadet groups taking part are the Port Talbot based sea cadets and the 499 squadron air cadets.

Halfway through the time allocated to plan this years Festival, the committee are in discussions with local primary and comprehensive schools and other agencies and organisations wishing to take part. This year’s festival is already showing it will be bigger and better than any in the past. If you, or your organisation feel you would like to become part of this major occasion, either by putting on a display, hiring a table or even being a sponsor, then please speak to Paula or Aled on 01639 870068, who will be pleased to assist you in any way they can.

I'm currently researching the Sparks/Sparkes family who originated from the Otterford area in Somerset. I will be looking at this site and the links in more detail, as I feel I can find something that will help me out in my research.

If anyone who reads this, can help me out with my research, it would be appreciated a lot and hopefully I can help you out. Thanks to the people who have created this site.

My branch of the Sparkes family is from Sussex and hampshire, and since folk didn't usually move far from home in the past, they are unlikely to be closely related. I hope that anyone else who sees this webpage sees mine and perhaps I can help them in their research.

A good site. I found you whilst looking for Norfolk Sparks relatives. There does seem a lot of you in the west. Maybe somebody will connect with my many Norwich forbears in the east.
Your research is very professional; far in advance of mine. Congratulations.
