Frenchmans Creek
This was my first ‘period drama’ to work on as a stuntman, and was great fun - although extremely hard work.

I was hired once again by Nick Powell whom I had performed a car knockdown stunt for a few weeks previous. I was to double Rochester (Tim Dutton) for a sword fight with British actress Tara Fitzgerald.

Tara was doubled by stuntwoman Dani Biernat, who had joined the elite ranks of The British Stunt Register at the same time as I.  We rehearsed the stunt in London before heading out to Cornwall for a further 2 days of rehearsal on set. Actually we did most of our rehearsing in the local village hall, helping the actors to learn some basic fencing moves.

In truth, the final shoot was a little disappointing. Nick had put together a good fight which utilised the entire banqueting hall and had us throwing props, falling over, kicking, punching, and dueling up and down the hall, hacking and thrashing. Dani and I put a lot of hard work and many hours in to this one. However, the director decided it was just too long (despite being his idea for a big finale!) and cut the routine in half. What made it to the screen was less than a quarter of the original fight!

Filming in beautiful sunny Cornwall with a fun cast and crew had been worthwhile, and I enjoyed it immensely. I left the set late that night, at about 11pm, to begin the 5 hour journey back to London, where I was required the next morning to be blown up by a gas oven!
