Colchester 10 - Ipswich 4

Colchester began the New Year in good spirits with a hard fought game against Ipswich. Playing in the newly refurbished Leisureworld fitness pool Colchester had a strong side out, all keen for pool time after an extended Christmas break with no games. The extra training should have seen Colchester to an easy victory but training is no substitute for real games as they soon found out. An early lapse saw Ipswich open the scoring early in the game. This saw Colchester spring into life as David Nicholson scored two and captain Simon Lecomber added another to squeeze into a the lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Colchester tighten up their defence and an early goal from Martin Vinter began to ease the tension but still they struggled to score goals. This was further highlighted when a penalty awarded to Colchester was saved by the Ipswich goalkeeper, keeping newly crowned penalty champion Chris Harrington’s shot out of the goal. Ipswich managed a goal back as captain Simon Lecomber lost his man down the wing and the youngster fired in past Jimmy Lang in the Colchester goal. The quarter finished with Colchester just in the ascendancy at 4-2.

Finally the third quarter saw Colchester’s shooting improve. Lecomber made amends for his earlier error with two well taken goals and James Tomlinson also scored a brace to signal his comeback to the team. Ipswich did score two further goals in the third quarter as they caught Colchester on the counter attack. However Colchester’s lead of 8-4 going into the final quarter was going to tough for Ipswich to pull back.

The final quarter saw Colchester press hard as Ipswich tired. A further goal for Lecomber and another for the tireless Duncan Lowe saw Colchester ease to a 10-4 victory, although they know they should have made the game allot easier for themselves and have work to do before playing Baslidon in two weeks time.
