AN AMERICAN nuclear submarine crashed head-on into an underwater mountain at
such high speed that the impact killed one sailor and injured half the crew, the
US Navy has revealed.
Joseph Ashley, 24, a Machinist Mate 2nd Class, was hurled 20ft (6m), hitting his
head on a metal pump. He died as crewmates tried unsuccessfully to manoeuvre a
stretcher carrying him through one of the vessel’s hatches as a helicopter
hovered above choppy seas waiting to winch him aboard.
Some 60 other sailors were injured, including 23 seriously enough to prevent
them carrying out their duties as the stricken attack submarine limped back to
its home port in Guam, the US protectorate in the South Pacific.
One sailor suffered a broken back while dozens were treated for broken arms,
legs and fingers and cuts and bruises.
The submarine was also severely damaged and partly flooded, although its nuclear
reactor remained unscathed.
Navy officials blamed their charts, saying the sea mountain did not appear on
them. A submarine’s sonar system only detects objects which give out emissions,
and instruments that sense rock gauge the depth to the ocean floor rather than
what is in front of the vessel.
The crash happened on Saturday but the full extent of the damage to the
submarine and its crew only emerged yesterday. Sailing for Australia, the San
Francisco was travelling at 30 knots — some 35mph — at a depth of 400ft when it
hit rock. The impact produced a “nearly instantaneous deceleration” to about
four knots, according to a leaked e-mail from a top admiral.
