DUTCH REGISTERED YACHT BEACHES DURING HEINEKEN RACE

Yarmouth Coastguard received a message at just after 2.00a.m. on 9 May 2001 after a Dutch registered schooner, 'Lucinia', ran aground and beached itself, 3 miles north east of Lowestoft at Holm Sands.

The Coastguard immediately requested Lowestoft Lifeboat to launch

Watch Manager, Roger Smith said, "We are currently monitoring the situation and waiting for high water at around 7.00 am. The vessel will hopefully then be able to be towed off the sands and will make its way into Lowestoft. There is a northeasterly force 2 wind on scene at the moment, which according to forecasts may begin to increase slightly in the morning. This should give us very good conditions for the operation."

The 29 metre steel hulled schooner was built in 1916 and was part of the Heineken Race from Ijmuiden to Lowestoft. Sixteen people are on board and will remain on the vessel until it arrives in Lowestoft.
