HUMBER COASTGUARD WEEKEND OF CHAOS

Humber Coastguard was struck by a spate of incidents in what can only be described as Bank Holiday mayhem.

Chaos descended on a stretch of coastline, resulting in 14 calls to the Bridlington based coastguard in one day.

Work began at 7am on 5 May, with a call from a yacht, which had run aground.

Reports of incidents continued to come in - nine of which were serious enough to require search and rescue assistance.

In the hours between 12.30pm and 5pm, the Coastguard was dealing with seven incidents at once.

One of the most serious, a hang-glider crashed at Bempton Cliffs and was taken by helicopter to Scarborough Hospital with multiple injuries.

In another, Filey Coastguard, the inshore lifeboat and a helicopter were deployed to rescue 14 people cut off by the tide at Filey Brigg.

Several incidents involved members of the Humber Yacht Club, on their annual Hull to Bridlington trail.

Richard Stewart, of Humber Coastguard, said: "It's a Bank Holiday weekend, and people are coming out to enjoy the spring weather. Unfortunately, a few make mistakes."
