DIVER FATALITY OFF BERWICKSHIRE

A diver, John Hawkins, 48, from Stoneybank Road, Thongsbridge, in the Huddersfield area has died after being engulfed by a big wave after he surfaced from a short descent.

The tragedy happened on 22 April 2001 off the St Abbs coastline in Berwickshire.

Mr. Hawkins was one of a group of eight divers from a Huddersfield-based club, the Seadog Divers' Club, who were taking part in a half-hour dive.

He was engulfed by a wave after resurfacing as he waited for a boat to pick him up, said police.

"He was swept away in the sea but was traced a short time later by other members of his group," said a spokesman for the Lothian and Borders force.

Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Once ashore, he was airlifted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
