Eastern 044/01 17 January 2001 HUMBER COASTGUARD SEARCH FOR MISSING COOK Humber Coastguard received an urgent call at 09:15 a.m. on 17 January 2001 from the Norwegian cargo vessel ‘Haukeur’ when it was discovered that the ship’s cook had gone missing. The Captain of ‘Haukeur’ confirmed that the last sighting of the missing man was at 06:30 a.m. when the vessel was approximately 14 miles off Whitby. The cook’s absence was first noticed at 08:30 a.m. by the crew on board and searches were immediately conducted while the vessel turned around on a reciprocal course. Coastguard requested the launch of the RNLI lifeboat from Whitby and the RAF Rescue Helicopter from Leconfield, both of which proceeded to the scene and conducted a search with the help of ‘Sardius’ a Whitby fishing vessel and the motor vessel, ‘Llano’. All surface units conducted a search of the area about 1 mile apart following the route ‘Haukeur’ had originally taken. Tony Ellis, Deputy District Controller at Humber Coastguard said, "The water is about 6 degrees and life expectancy is not great at this temperature. All units will continue to search in earnest while there is any chance of finding the missing man alive." The weather on scene is light southeasterly winds with slight seas and swell. UPDATE: 18 January 2001 The extensive air and sea search for the missing crewman from the
Norwegian vessel 'Haukur', discovered missing early yesterday, was finally
called off at 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. |
