On to Portland Bill a quick scan of the sea yielded c25 Common scoter.Top fields
Faired better with at least 3 Short-Eared Owls hunting over the rough grassland a pair of Stonechats also noted. Turning back
on ourselves we visited Portland
Castle, birds added 2 female Common Scoter 10 Turnstones, 2 razorbills, Rock Pipit and the lone Great Northern Diver again.
On to Lodmoor RSPB give us views of a Peregrine Falcon and a fly over Golden Plover and Green Woodpecker.
All in all not a great day but considering the bad weather conditions the
Birding could have been a lot worse.

Bowling Green Marsh Area, Devon.
2 Jan 2003.

A mid morning start saw us at Bowling green marsh Devon.
Overcast skies was not going to aid us today as far as digi-
scoping was concerned.Quickly the star bird was located
Glossy Ibis, but unfortunatly it always was distant,4 Spoonbills,
Little Egret,Spotted redshank,Grey lag goose,brent geese,Green
Sandpiper and many common duck species where also on the marsh.
A stroll along the goat walk on the river exe gave us views of
4 Spoonbills a few Grey plover and Avocets.
Over to Exminster failed to give up any Woodlark or Cirl Bunting
at there favoured sites and like wise any Cetti's Warblers at
Exminster marsh due to roads being flooded.
A good day out getting rid of the christmas excess's.

Severnside 11 Jan 2003.

I knew it was important when my mobile phone rang at 10am, I stared at my phone
and the word Dick was glowing at me, I quickly answered and was told a Redhead smew was off New Passage severn beach(the 3rd record for the site).
Some 1/2 hour later a arrived at the site, the bird was in flight and I was very
grateful to John Martin to putting me on the bird, site tick No 1 for me.
Several Jack Snipe had been seen earlier in the week at Chittening Warth, so
off myself and Dick Reader went. The 1st bird of note was a Water Rail flushed from the fore-shore spartina, then my prize a Jack Snipe giving me patch tick
No 2. 2 more Jack Snipe, 3 Common Snipe ,2 Reed Buntings,3 Rock Pipits and
several Redshanks also noted.Off to the Orchard Pools where we met up with
Paul Digi-scoper Bowerman.Another Water Rail was duly noted, into the plantation
where 8+ siskins were feeding on alders with a flock of Goldfinches.Back into
our cars for the short trip to Severn Beach.
Walking south from the 2nd severn crossing a few Oystercatcher were noted along
with more Redshank and Dunlin, nearing the old rubbish tip Mr B left the path
into an over grown area of trees and scrub in hope of flushing a Woodcock(a
favoured site)almost instantly a Woodcock was flushed.(Patch tick No3 for me.)
Unfortunately it was not seen by Mr Bowerman who had did all the leg work.
All in All a great day at my Adopted Local Patch....
