I knew it was important when my mobile phone rang at 10am, I stared at my phone
and the word Dick was glowing at me, I quickly answered and was told a Redhead smew was off New Passage severn beach(the 3rd
record for the site).
Some 1/2 hour later a arrived at the site, the bird was in flight and I was very
grateful to John Martin to putting me on the bird, site tick No 1 for me.
Several Jack Snipe had been seen earlier in the week at Chittening Warth, so
off myself and Dick Reader went. The 1st bird of note was a Water Rail flushed from the fore-shore spartina, then my prize
a Jack Snipe giving me patch tick
No 2. 2 more Jack Snipe, 3 Common Snipe ,2 Reed Buntings,3 Rock Pipits and
several Redshanks also noted.Off to the Orchard Pools where we met up with
Paul Digi-scoper Bowerman.Another Water Rail was duly noted, into the plantation
where 8+ siskins were feeding on alders with a flock of Goldfinches.Back into
our cars for the short trip to Severn Beach.
Walking south from the 2nd severn crossing a few Oystercatcher were noted along
with more Redshank and Dunlin, nearing the old rubbish tip Mr B left the path
into an over grown area of trees and scrub in hope of flushing a Woodcock(a
favoured site)almost instantly a Woodcock was flushed.(Patch tick No3 for me.)
Unfortunately it was not seen by Mr Bowerman who had did all the leg work.
All in All a great day at my Adopted Local Patch....
