Cuba had long been a place I had wanted to visit . This gritty and determined tiny island has seen off the best attempts by it's massive and also determined neighbour the USA to undermine it . Cuba has been reviled, accused, condemned, blockaded, invaded, exploited and belittled by the USA, all to little or no avail . Personally it gave me great satisfaction to see the big bully of the region thwarted by this tiny island of revolutionaries . After the Bay of Pigs the CIA even teamed up with the Mafia ! to no avail , in it's attempts to install another dictator on the island. The USA has done similar things in the past in the rest of Central America and the Caribbean . Fidel Castro is still respected by the vast majority of Cuban people , even loved by others , and this is what the US cannot comprehend , that they would rather give their loyalty to this man , the revolution and Cuba for self determination rather than live under the yoke of Washington and have Gucci shoes, fast food, consumerism, and very little say in how their country is run . The Cubans may not have much , the US has seen to that , but they enjoy life on a level that most overworked , underpaid and unhappy Americans cannot comprehend . I am still told by some , who have not even been to Cuba that it is a repressed communist country . I can only judge by my own personal experience , from one end of the island to the other I did not find a person frightened to speak his or her mind , whatever the topic. They may not have much but they certainly now how to live .
