Inchcolm Abbey |
|
Inchcolm Abbey stands on Inchcolm island which is one of several islands on the Firth of Forth. It was built in 1123 after King David I granted permission for a monastic settlement there. Nowadays of course it is a semi-ruin, but it still contains the best preserved examples of monastic buildings from this period. In its day it was known as the "Iona of the East" after Iona Abbey off the West Coast of Scotland which was founded by Saint Columba. Today it is owned by Historic Scotland & you can even hire it out for weddings if you wish to get married there! In the summer some plays from the Edinburgh International Festival are performed there. |
