Warwickshire Open U21

Warwickshire Open U21’s/ U16’s 2006

In Memory of Jack Macleod

Saturday & Sunday 18th /19th November

This event took place at Rileys, Hertford Place, Coventry where all the Warwickshire County teams play their county matches during the year.

The competition was sponsored by Rileys (U21’s) and Fibrecase UK (U16’s) who bought the shields.  Raffles & Phil Parkin, who played pool for 6 hours at the Tiltyard in Kenilworth, helped to raise the money towards the trophies.

The event organisers Terry & Hazel Parkin and the Warwickshire Youth teams felt this competition needed to happen in the memory of Jack who we all continue to miss. Jack was a quiet, friendly, polite and a very valuable member of county pool.

The weekend started on Saturday November 18th with Warwickshire’s County Secretary, Gaz Calcott doing the opening ceremony including a minute silence.

Speeches from Ewan Macleod on behalf of himself and wife, Sheena & Wark’s ‘A’ Youth team manager, Terry Parkin took place before the start of play.

The event had 40 entries for the U21’s, some of them travelling many miles to get here. The counties involved were Suffolk, Dorset, Somerset, West Midlands, Worcestershire, Buckinghamshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire & of course Warwickshire.

The competition was run on the ‘Swiss System’ (each person having 3 lives). On Saturday we got down to the last 8 players.

The quarter finalists started play on Sunday morning.

These were : Karl Sutton                          (Suffolk)               5

                         Shawn Smith                  (West Midlands)    0

 Phil Parkin                     (Warwickshire)      4

                         Ryan Hewitt                   (Nottinghamshire)  5

 Jeff Owen                      (West Midlands)    5

                         Aaron Easson                (Warwickshire)      3

 Howard Bailie                (Warwickshire)      1

                         Richard Twomey           (Suffolk)               5

The Semi: Karl Sutton 6 – 1 Ryan Hewitt

                  Jeff Owen 2 – 6 Richard Twomey

The Final was a classic as both players came from Suffolk & they also play for the England Youth Team. Level after the first 4 frames. Karl took the next 3 frames to lead 5-2. Richard then took the next 3 frames to level the score again 5-5. Karl took the next & yet again Richard levelled to take it into a deciding frame. In previous competitions Karl has reached 2 semis & at least 2 quarter finals & we thought here we go again, but it was Karl who won the deciding frame to win this first Warwickshire U21’s Open. Karl will be back to defend his title next year.
