Outings
Our calendar doesn't really get into full swing until the middle of Spring, it just happens that way, but if
the rest of the members are like me then it's the warmer weather and lighter nights that get me out. We
have of course done things earlier on in the year, like tenpin bowling and pub meals to name just a couple.
With the opening of a multiplex cinema in Burton later in the year it will mean that some will be visiting the cinema
more often than we visit the one at Derby We will of cause be doing other things like going out for
meals, karaoke and quizzes on club nights and much more.
On the 15th of December 2000 most of us went to the NEC to a 60's concert in aid of the Banardo's charity, we went the
previous year also, most of the acts appearing were their on both ocassions, there was Mud, Hot Chocalate, Alvin
Stardust, Shawaddywaddy, Roy Wood, Suzie Quatro, and a couple more, being a Roy Wood fan, I was actually dissappointed
with his performance, but they did raise a lot of money.
On 3rd June 2001 the first party from our club went on a boat trip, we started from Wanlip, Syston we had
an enjoyable day the sun was shining. About 12 members went we all took a packed lunch and we stopped at the
Waterside Inn and we at the side of the river which was most pleasant. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, Tom
was helping open the locks with a little help from Margarets Grandson Jack.
On Thursday the 16th August 2001 we followed other members of
Burton Phab Club to our destination which
was the canalside at Wanlip in Leicestershire where a
narrowboat was waiting for us. It was fitted with an excellent lift so that those of us in wheelchairs boarded
without any problems and after settling down we started our steady cruise for about an hour, then we came to the
Waterside Inn where we stopped for lunch. We sat outside on benches enjoying many giggles and although it
only rained for a very short time we were glad of the parasols while waiting the 40 minutes or so for our meal.
After having plenty to eat we boarded and set off again but after half an hour we moored up while someone
took orders and fetched ice creams. Then we carried on cruising taking in the lovely scenery and enjoying the
company which made it a very nice experience and I for one was sorry when it ended. As guests of the Phab club Colin and
I were very grateful for being invited, and thank you all very much, Colin and Joan Forrest.
Safari Park
In June 2002 some of us went to West Midlands Safari Park, we had lunch as soon as we
arrived, then got back in the minibus and drove around the park seeing various animals,
the we parked again to find toilets and finished the day with ice creams before travelling
back home.

Our Visit to Althorp House.
Thursday 25th September 2003
There were 10 of us that went. It was a lovely day and people took picnics.
When we arrived we were shown where the exhibition of Diana’s life story was. First port of call was about her young life at school, and at home which included looking at home movies, uniforms, toys etc.
Next building was all about her engagement and wedding to Prince Charles, which included her Wedding Dress, bridesmaids dresses and jewelry. Also included in the exhibition was her Charity work as well as the love of her boys.
Then we went to another building that housed many of her dresses and outfits. I was quite surprised how small she was. At the end of this building there was a glass case that covered the whole wall, full of Books of Condolence from all over the world. It was just amazing.
We then went around the main house and you could definitely see that it was lived in at certain times of the year.
Then we went down to the lake to look at the island where she is buried and the memorial that stands opposite the lake. It was all beautiful. It seems to me that it was such a shame that a young life was taken so sadly. She did such a lot of good work at home and abroad. It looked such a wonderful place to grow up in.
Tenpin Bowling
13th November saw us back at the alley in Derby, we used to go on a regular basis and intend to restart, a funtime was had by
all and in the end John won the able bodied section with Mandy triumphing in the wheelchair section
SUNDAY MAY 29th
Today, several club members went to Snibston Discovery Park in Coalville which is on the site of the old Snibston Colliery. It was a working mine from 1833 to 1983. Then, in 1985, it was bought by Leicester County Council and turned into a museum.
There is lots to see and do there. In the main building a scientific exhibition to find out how things work, very interesting.
A transport department with old trains, buses, a horse drawn hearse and a milk cart to name a few.
A museum of fashion had just been added too which was quite interesting.
Outside, there is a large play area for children, you can take a trip on a train round the colliery or sit and have your picnic in an old railway dining car. Unfortunately, it was not accessible to wheelchairs but the management was very accomodating and allowed us to eat our picnics on the tables at the side of the cafe which was in the main hall where there is also a shop.
All in all,I think everyone enjoyed themselves. As while the younger members interested themselves in the scientific section, the older ones took a trip down "memory lane"

On 30th June 2005 some of our members went to the Crich Tramway Museum, it was just like a railway station from the 1950's, we were able to have a ride on an adapted one that had been imported from Halle, Germany, it was still in use in the mid 1990's. The drivers and conductors all vollunteers and are good at their jobs although they are quite old. Michelle & Jed

We recently had a trip out to Crich in Derbyshire which is Near Matlock. at Crich there is a Tram Museum which is very interesting. There are several trams which have been imported from Germany as well as more from different parts of this county. The tram drivers are dressed up in uniform and the trams take people for a short journey through the countryside. They give interesting talks as you go round, also the two German trams have lifts to get the wheelchairs into the trams, we had a lovely day, taking a picnic lunch and then a look round the souvenir shops. A word of warning - do not have a pint of beer in the pub there, it is warm and undrinkable as it comes from a cardboard container !! we shall be returning at a later date as we really enjoyed it ian and hazel
On the 8th of July 10 of us went to Wanlip to cruise the canal on anarrow boat named the Sunbeam, the colour had been changed from blue to green since our previous visit. The weather was nice but not too hot, we had a picnic on board, and along the way Mandy fed the ducks and swans, on our way back to the mooring we had ice creams and Mark steered the boat for a time, disapointingly we did not travel as far as last time.

On Friday 8th July a group of 10 people went on a canal boat for the day. The weather was fine it didn't rain one bit. The skippers had left the milk behind and we stopped at the first lock and he cycled all the way back to the car. The ride was so relaxing some of us nearly nodded off. I steered the boat and I didn't crash it once. They offered us a cup of tea or coffee along the trip.
At lunch time we had a picnic on the boat and I put some rubbish in Colin's bag because I thought it was a rubbish bag. We had an ice cream on the way back and we fed the swans & ducks. We had a brilliant time on the canal boat.

BOAT TRIP 17th AUGUST
Today the second group went on their boat trip. The canal boat took us from Syston to Mount Sorrell or from The Hope and Anchor to the Wayside Inn to be more precise where we had lunch. Some had pub grub and others had a basket of chips to eat with their picnics. On the way back, we stopped at Sileby Mill for an icecream. It was a lovely day.The sun shone all day. In fact it was too hot at times and the occasional bridge we went under and the tall riverside trees gave us some very welcome shade.
Katherine, our newest member, brought her bird book along to identify any birds she saw and she wasnt disappointed, there were plenty about, including a couple of herons, swans, ducks, moor hens and coots.
The rivers Soar and Reek were lovely. We saw weirs and went through locks, Everyone enjoyed themselves. It couldnt have been a lovelier day for sailing down the river!

Sunday 13th November 15 of us were at the NEC to see Jasper Carrot's Rock with
Laughter Show, night and heard G 4, of X Factor fame as I was told,
never watched the prog myself but
they were very good, and think myself they will go far. Carrot along with Lenny
Henry, Bill Bailey and Phil Cool were brilliant, also on were The Move, The Bootleg
Beetles, Wayne Fontana, Dave Dee, Mike Pender, Brian Poole and two other frontmen
from that era. The Riverdance People put in an appearance, the only disapointment
of the night was Bonnie Tyler, absolute rubbish, but her lead guitarist could make
it talk.
