user posted imageTHE RULES

A: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE

1. Who competes/ plays what?:
The tournament is a public BTOOIC tournament. This means that all BTOOIC members that want to join have automatic permission. Since it is unlikely that we will have 15 BTOOIC contestants. NonBTOOICers will be invited after the 8th of january. Swolte will choose which are worthy..
All contestants will be treated equal in regard to the rules and judge-decisions.
The 15 contestants will be spread at random among the maps.

2. What tournament/ maps?:
This is an AoW2 pbem tournament (play by email) and will feature home made (read: very good quality) Age of Wonders2 maps. The BTOOIC is the nice clan (mindaltering happyhappy doughnut cult) that organises this.
The winner wins the Champion_award.
- 1st round maps (one winner per map): Goldrush mountains, Manarush lake, Academy of War, War of the Hill.
- 1/2 final maps: Valley of Flowers, Danny's Sock.
- Final map: Oblivion.

3. When start/ end?:
Swolte will start the tournament in the weekend of 10-12 January.
The first round of the tournament will last untill the 1st of March. The 1/2 finals (officially) untill the 1st of April. The final untill the 1st of may.
If decisions fall earlier than the official end date. the successive finals will start sooner.

4. Where and how?
Swolte will set the games up and start logging threads at the AoW2Heaven Pbem section. From that moment the tournament has begun. Players will log their turn and do their best to play turns as fast as possible.

B: POSTING & LOGGING !!

Most pbem games fail to finish because one player fails to play turns on a regular basis. This can be loss of interest (player is losing, other game is more interesting, tv), computer problems or 'reallife'-events (new job, school tests, relational tensions, etc..).
Whatever the reason, this is also the No 1 concern for this tournament to fail! The rules concerning regular turning and posting are strict, especially the first round. A slow example to explain why their must be pressure on logging: If 4 players each do a turn each day on average; we are at day 2 (ingame) after 4 days... if this pace continues the game would be at day 7 (ingame) after a month (28 days)!! This is permitted but with a committing group one day (ingame) per day should be do-able. Perhaps even more..
Before joining, realise that entering this tournament is a serious commitment. If you are good it might even last months... Regular (home) internet acces is important! Expect to 'hobby' 20 minutes per day on this.

1. Playing turns:
Players must, in general (!!!), be able to play turns every 48 hours. If a player cannot commit to this, that player may not enter this tournament. This will be measured in contrast to the 'date-time' of the last post that sent a turn in the logthread.

> If a player can't play his turn within 48 hours without giving notice he may recieve a 'reminder' in the thread and per email by the tournament judge.
> If that player doesn't respond in the thread (or email: swolte1@hotmail.com) within 24 hours he/she will get an official turn-warning
> A player that has one official turn-warning and doesn't respond within 48 hours is disqualified.

> A player that has 'survived' a turn-warning in the past and fails to play his turn within 48 hours without notice is instantly disqualified.

NOTE: See rule B2 for exceptions and interruptions!

2. Exceptions and interruptions!

Does this mean you can't visit your parents in the weekend? Can't get away from your computer for more than 2 days?
OF COURSE NOT! smile.gif

- Contestants may take longer than 48 hours to play their turn when they give notice when they will return. Tell in the logthread that you are unable to play for 4 days and all is fine.. Just don't do it too much, of course.
- If you are gone for more than 7 days you are disqualified unless the player can come up with a solution that all fellow players agree with.
- Excessive use of these exception rules may result in disqualification. The tournament judges will decide.

3. Logging:
You must log your turns in the pbem thread right after you play them. Even a 'turn sent' is enough. One reminder and 3 log-warnings and you will be disqualified.
Valid reasons (warning/reminder doesn't count):
- Site was down.
- Absolutely no time (emergency: house on fire).

4. GIVE NOTICE!!
It is the first responsibility of the player to give notice when there are problems. If AoWHEAVEN is down and you cannot log, give notice at this site or mail the judges. If you have computer problems that may last longer, go to an internet cafe, friend, library or anything else with computer access to send a single mail and all is fine.
Accept the fact that if it does take too long, the tournament will continue. No matter how valid the reason.

5. Special:
- If the player before you logged but forgot/failed to sent your turn you are to indicate that at the forums or contact the tournament judge (swolte1@hotmail.com) as fast as possible.
- Swolte (or Iznoghoud), to their best of intentions and wisdom, will decide what will be done in situations that do not fit under any of the above.

C: WINNING/LOSING CONDITIONS

1. Winner is the player that has the most city-points after the last official day of play (round will be played).
An outpost is 1 point, village 2 points, town 3 points, city 4 points. If a player has killed (not just sending to the void) an enemy wizard, it gives 5 bonus points per wizard.

If undecided the player with the most 'gold/manaworth' of units will win (heroes: 75 + level*50gp).

This is an integral part of the tournament so keep these in mind.

2. A player may also 'surrender' his forces. One is strongly urged to not give up too early. Unbalancing situations may occur (units turning independant and joining factions etc.. that may stongly influence the outcome and may not benefit the 'best' player.
Please consult with the judges and players before surrendering.

D: FAIR PLAY

1. Use of serious threatening, rude and vulgar language towards opponents or judges will instantly be punished by disqualification.

2. Must remain on official 'war' status, although 'secret alliences' are allowed!! It is not permitted to deliberately lose in order to give another player a clear advantage.
Ingame lying and decieving is allowed (yet disadvised), roleplaying...

3. You are permitted/advised to look at the 'original' tournament maps before playing. They can be downloaded at our website.

4. All maps underwent strict 'balancing'. Swolte is responsible for the maps being more or less balanced. Globally:
- Very powerful items were removed.
- Every player beyond the first has 10 gp start extra. This is to combat turnorder effects.
- Unbalanced placement of resources, cities, troops corrected in nonsymmetrical maps.
- Mistakes corrected.
For more information contact swolte at: swolte1@hotmail.com

5. (unexplained) Restarts.
Are allowed but may not be abused. Speed goes before restarts.
If you create a restart it is good pbem etiquette to explain that in the turnlog. You are strongly advised to do so!
This tournament is based on trust.
Rules regardinfg restarts may differ in the finals.

6. Honest play.
The usual:
- No precognition: example: looking at other players turns from other (nonpassword protected) players that are in play or replaying your own to obtain more information on positions of other players.
- No replaying own turns to obtain more info or better results
- Don't do anything that you wouldn't want other players to do as well. Keep things friendly and remember it is a game.

E: TOURNAMENT ORGANISATION/PROCEDURES

1. Tournament judges.
Swolte and Iznoghoud are the tournament judges. They have the right to alter/expand rules and to make decisions that may not fall under the current ones. They will do this to the best of their knowledge and wisdom.

2. Disqualifications.
If players get disqualified, their turns are sent to the judges. The judges will 'surrender' the forces of that player and the game can continue. Any unbalancing situations that arise are unfortunately part of the tournament.
This is also the reason the players must give their passwords to the judges before the tournament begins.

3. Warnings.
Any log- and turnwarnings will be removed after a final/round.

user posted image Ok, since this tournament is based on trust I need a promise that will 'ensures' the commitment.

This is how you can join this tournament: copy and paste the following in a reply and you have joined! (don't forget to fill in your email, etc)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Email:
Country or time zone (play turns how late):
I promise:
- I have read and accepted all the rules. I will respect any decisions made by the tournament judges that the rules may not cover.
- I will not cheat in any way.
- I will do my best to play my turns as fast as possible and to keep a good pace. I will also log all my turns. I will inform fellow players when I cannot commit to this.
- If I password-protect my turns, I will send my password to swolte1@hotmail.com.

user posted image Ok, after these 'heavy' words, do remember it's all about having fun. Anyone with some good stamina and home-internet access should be a good competitor. Don't ever let these rules withhold a good willed player! Skill is not an issue! I hope to get a good mix of bad, moderate, good and expert players.
(remember, the more BTOOICians are in, the more chance we get a winner...)

user posted image The maps used for the tournament (first round) are already available for download at this website (download section)

user posted image phew! You're just in, Ror! Anyway, the recruitment is closed!

logging is.. that you write about your turn. This can be as much as: 'turn played'. This is to check who's got the turn (and decide when a player is a too slow one..).

I'll put you on the 'reserve-list' (in case any of the BTOOIC's drop out or get disqualified, if a nonBTOOIC drops out I get a nonBTOOIC).
I do estimate a drop out early (The people that didn't read the rules completely on the 48-hours-without-notice=rule, and find out they can't after all...)
