GOALS-- How to Get What You Want

Everybody wants things. Even though we know we should go to the Gohonzon first, we also know that we have to do more than chanting. After all, you can't chant to learn Algebra and then not study! Buddhism is action. Here's a guide on how to attain your goals.

1. IDENTIFY your goals. Write your goals down. Example: "I want to learn to drive."

2. Give yourself a DEADLINE. For example, "I will take my drivers license test next Thursday."

3. List the OBSTACLES that stand in your way "I am scared of cars. I don't know the rules of the road. I don't understand what a clutch is."

4. Identify (list) the PEOPLE you need to help you attain your goal. "Dad can take me driving, and my sister can quiz me on the stuff in the book."

5. List the SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE you need. "I need to learn the rules of the road, learn when to brake, how to back up safely and learn to parallel park."

6. Devise a PLAN OF ACTION. "I'll study the car manual at lunch, get quizzed on it right after school and go driving with Dad from 5:15-6 p.m. every weekday until next Wednesday."

7. List the BENEFITS. "What's in it for me if I learn how to drive?"

8. Physically LOOK at your goal list only (not the rest) three times a day: in the morning, at night, and once in the middle of the day. Maybe before morning and evening gongyo, and again after school?

9. THINK about your goals as often as possible.

10. KEEP CHANTING about your goals every step of the way.

GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATULATIONS ON ATTAINING YOUR GOALS!
