Elmwood A stretch lead at the top of the A Division

Elmwood A have won all their 6 games this season and they now lead the table by three points from Peterlee.  The Rooks are in third on 8 points and Redcar are in fourth on 7 points.  It will certainly be an interesting title race in the A Division, but Elmwood have set out to win it in good style.  However if The Rooks and Peterlee keep just in behind Elmwood they will be in with a chance of winning the title if Elmwood slip up.

Whitby lead the B Division after four games

Although Whitby are the outright leaders of the B Division it is a very wide open league.  Just in behind Whitby are three teams all on 6 points.  Darlington are in fifth on 4 points and then there are three teams yet to get off the mark.  The crunch match for the next set of games is the fixture between Darlington and Whitby.  The match should be pretty close and it will have a great effect on the race for promotion to the A Division even at this early stage in the season.

Elmwood Juniors beat Elmwood B 5-0

This fixture is usually a very interesting one and this one was no exception.  Last year Elmwood B had the upper hand beating the Juniors 4½-1½ in the first match and the second game ended in a 3-3 draw.  Both teams fielded their strongest possible teams and it was all set up for a close encounter.  However to the surprise of myself the Juniors romped home 5-0.  On top board Phil Mitcheson continued his excellent form this season with a win against Alan Trotter.  Snowdon Taylor played extremely well and was looking like he had the game won until Brian fought back well and queened one of his pawns to win. Nick Webb produced a rook and pawn endgame against Geoff Garnett, but Nick simply has too many pawns and took the victory.  David Gorley played his endgame very nicely to defeat Alan Stockley.  Derek Simpson played very well against me until I took advantage of my doubled rooks on the c file to win a piece.
