John Baril 1242
Plea 1242:
John Baril is given the tenancy of land in Wynkanton (Wincanton)
1276 Baril's mill
Three mills were recorded in 1086. By the 14th century there were said
to be 14. During the 16th century large numbers of millstones were imported
through Bridgwater.
The mill on the royal manor in 1086 was said to be worth 20s. a year
in 1276. It was probably the mill usually known as Baril's Mill in the
early 14th century and as New Mill in 1349. Baril's Mill was held with
Vowell's lands until after 1770. By 1838 it was owned by the miller.
Known as Petherton mills, it remained in use until c. 1920 powered by water
and steam. It lay on the north-east side of High Street. The pond has been
filled in and the buildings have been demolished.

MANORS AND OTHER ESTATES.
An estate described in the 16th century as HOLWELL manor and perhaps before
1539 owned by Buckland priory came into the possession of Thomas Hill (d.
1565), and he sold part of it to Edward Jenkins (d. c. 1572). (Footnote
47) Andrew Jenkins (d. 1593) held other land of George Hill, Thomas's son.
(Footnote 48) By the 17th century three separate holdings at Holwell may
have derived from Hill's estate. One, later known as Nether, Lower, or
Middle Holwell, was assigned in 1602 by John Malet and his wife Mary to
John Colford, in succession to John Jenkins. (Footnote 49) The Colfords,
who are said to have held the land in chief by knight service, remained
in possession until the later 17th century, but by 1710 had sold to George
Buller. (Footnote 50) George's great-nephew, also George Buller, sold it
in 1789 to John Barrell, and John's son, also John, in 1857 conveyed it
to the Revd. Henry Codrington. Henry conveyed it to trustees. (Footnote

In 1225 Roger Baril, serjeant of Petherton hundred, had a house in
the hundred and in the 1240s Roger Baril, possibly the same, held land
in North Petherton, probably what was later called VOWELL'S lands. In 1279
Roger's widow Alice released her dower to her heir John Baril who held
land in 1270. John is said to have received land near Petherton park and
in Hay moor from Henry of Erleigh. He died without issue before 1296 and
his land was held by the Erleighs in the early 14th century. By 1466 Robert
Baril held the land. Gillian Vowell, who held it by 1477 and in 1491 gave
her estates in North Petherton and Huntworth to trustees to the uses of
her will, was dead by 1492 when her estates, described as formerly Baril's,
had passed to her son Richard Vowell. Richard was followed by his
son William (d. 1552). William, probably William's son, with his wife Margaret
and Thomas Vowell, sold the estate to Sir Roger Bluet in 1561. It descended
with the Bluets' manor of North Petherton.
A house known as Baril's Place was recorded in the 18th century but
had gone by 1770.
Roger Baryl 1225
Somerset Pleas of 1225;
Roger Baryl is the Sergeant at North Petherton
Roger Baril 1242
Philip Baril 1242
Somerset Pleas of 1242
Nicholas de Tresor was outlawed for burning the house of Roger Baril,
upon the suit of Philip Baril.
Gilbert Baryl 1242
Somerset Pleas of 1242
Gilbert Baryl is in trouble for claiming possession of land in North
Petherton;
Gilbert Baryl 1280
1280:
Land dispute, North Petherton - Gilbert Baryl (who didn't turn up)
and John Baryl who said the lands were in Wolmerston, not North Petherton.
John Baryl 1242
John Baryl concerned with land in North Petherton.
John Baril 1242
Plea 1242:
John Baril is given the tenancy of land in Wynkanton (Wincanton)
John Baril 1280
Joan who was the wife of John de Harptre 'seeks against John Baril
a third part of five acres of land in North Petherton'.
John Baryl 1280
John Baryl is in trouble also in 1280, not turning up when summoned
because he hasn't paid rent; his lands were therefore 'distrained' and
he was ordered to appear again.
Denise Baril 1280
24 July 1280 Alice who was the wife of Richard de Carnston seeks against
Thomas Crek and Anastasia his wife 12 acres of land and one acre of meadow
in North Petherton which she claims to be her right by grant of Denise
Baril.
Roger Baril 1280
Alice who was the wife of Roger Baril seeks against Thomas and Anastasia
Crek a messuage in North Petherton which she claims was her right by the
gift of John Baril...and Thomas and Anastasia say they don't hold the messuage,
it belongs to Gilbert Baryl - which Alice cannot deny, and is 'in mercy'
for a false claim.
William Barail 1280
Roger de barail 1280
Gilbert Barrayll 1280
1280 Alice who was the wife of Roger Barail seeks against Thomas le
Crek a third part of four acres of land and of a rent of three shillings
in North Petherton as a dower.. and Thomas vouches to warranty thereon
William son of Roger de Barail, who is present.. and so it was all settled!
Although in the following weeks (still in 1280) Alice received dower of
a third part of 30 acres of land at North Petherton from Gilbert Barrayll.
William Baraill son of Roger Baraill 1280
Alice is involved again about a garden in North Petherton which Gilbert
had no entry since Roger Baraill had given Thomas le Crek authority. Roger's
son William is also involved, being asked to pay, but he claims to have
had nothing left to him by his father, and will pay when he has the money.

Charles Barrell 1720, Mill
MILLS.
Mills were recorded in 1086 at Radlet and Merridge. The former may
have been either in Spaxton or in Nether Stowey. There was a mill at Radlet
in 1311 and two fulling mills there in the 17th and 18th centuries, one
in Nether Stowey and one in Spaxton. The mill at Merridge was mentioned
in 1201 and 1225 and may be Cornwell's mill, held by Charles Barrell in
1720. John Williams held two mill houses at Merridge in 1787 but the mill
may have gone out of use by 1816 and none survived by 1838. There was a
Mill close at Lower Merridge.
