History of our Community Group

In this section we will tell you about how the Community Group was started.

Before the Community Group was established, there were two other Groups
and these were called Harriston Tenants & Residents Group and the Village Hall
Group. They worked on different issues, the Tenants & Residents Group was
there to work with Allerdale Borough Council (which is now Derwent & Solway
Housing Association), they discussed things like Housing, Environment and
Repairs.

The Village Hall Group worked around the Village Hall, they run Events much
the same as events which run at the present time, they maintained
the building and they also held parties each week which at times were Live Acts.
The Village Hall Group was established long before the Tenants Group.
The Hall Group did an excellent job of running the Village Hall, the main
reason for both groups becoming one was volunteers.

Each group continued to work seperatly until around about 3 years when
it become apparent that due to external factors the best way forward
was for the two Groups to merge into one. A meeting took place where
this was looked at and it was suggested that both groups join together,
it was decided to merge and thus Harriston Community Centre Group was
formed. The group continues to maintain the Village Hall and all thats
associated with that along with working along side
Derwent & Solway HA who is our Landlord.

At present our committee is quite small, we have 12 members and from
these we elect the Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary and Treasurer.
We are working with Derwent & Solway HA, who owns the Village Hall;
on completing a Lease. This would enable us to eventually become
a group with Charitable Status then we could apply for larger pots of
funding so the Village Hall would be refurbished. We will be doing this
in Partnership with Derwent & Solway HA.
