By "big cat" I mean this, not this.
Kitty Tiger -- Liger -- Lynx -- Sabre Liger -- Sabretooth Tiger -- Twin Liger -- Werepanther -- Weretiger
This monster's name is somewhat bizarre. It could mean that this is a tiger cub or simply weaker than the sabretooth tiger (Final Fantasy Origins' translators seem to prefer the latter explanation, as they renamed this creature the "lesser tiger"). The kitty tiger's appearence seems to be a combination of the tiger (the stripes) and the sabretooth tiger (the teeth).

A liger is the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger (the offspring of a lioness and male tiger is called a tigon). Ligers can grow up to twice the size of a Siberian tiger, making them the largest type of cat in the world.

The lynx is a type of wildcat that lives in North America and across Asia. Lynxes are noted for their acute eyesight - they can detect a roe dear at a distance of 600 metres. FF3's lynx appears to be some kind of lycanthrope.

Erm... well, it seems that someone at Square really likes ligers. The sabre liger is a combination of liger and sabretooth tiger, but the origin of the twin liger is more obscure.

The sabretooth or sabre-toothed tiger was a type of cat that lived in what are now the Americas during the Ice Age and went extinct at around 9000 B.C. As they weren't closely related to modern-day tigers, "sabre-toothed cat" is considered a more accurate name than "sabre-toothed tiger". FF1, however, makes them stripy, a reference to real tigers.
