The culture of the Ossetian people has a history which goes back to thousands of years. This is borne by the original art
of
ancient Koban& the Alani of Medieval times. The emergence of professional pictorial art in Ossetia, esp. painting, is inseparably
linked with the names of Kosta Khetagurov& Makharbek Tuganov, both graduates of the St.Petersburg Academy of Arts. The rise&
growth of the Russian Ossetian School of Painting are greately indebted to the creative work of these two masters.
A revolutionary democrat & the father of Ossetian literature, Kosta Khetagurov was the pioneer of realistic painting in Ossetia,
who devoted all his creative endeavour to his people.

The highly optimistic work of Makharbek Tuganov, singing the beauty of life& the creative powers of man, reflects the momentous
events which had occured in the life of the country in general& Ossetia in particular after the establishment of Soviet Power.
The North Ossetia Alania is known by its traditions, which go back to ancient times but people follow them till now. It is
expressed in a peculiar but very beautiful music, folk dances& even food. As to folk dancing ensembles the most popular are
"Iriston", "Goretz", "Alan".
There are several museums that keep the spirit of our history. Among them are "Kosta Khetagurov's Museum", " Museum of Local
Lore", "Makharbek Tuganov's Museum"& many others.
Nowadays the theatres of our town such as "Russian Drama Theatre", "Ossetian Drama Theatre", "Musical Theatre", "Puppet-show
Theatre".
