 You and Yours Part 2

Disreguarded as tempremental, flighty and difficult by many, thoroughbreds still have what it takes to compete at the top. In reality they are senstive, intelligent and ready for anything even when you are not! They vary from the quiet and content to the fire and brimestone  you just have to pick which point on the scale suits you.

Thoroughbreds do extremely well at eventing, it suits their intelligence(plenty to think about) and athetic build(long gallops and big jumps combined with tight corners and control).

Karen Dixon started her career on an expoint-to-pointer bought by her mother and William Fox-Pitt competed the 18yr old exracehorse Stunning(pic.above), coming 3rd in his first outing in 2004, retiring at the end of the season with thousands of BE points.

Congratulations to Pippa Funnell and the 9yr old ex-racehorse Blue Horizon who won the Windsor International Horse Trials over the May bank holiday 2005.

Both Java Tiger and Ben Faerie, were full Thoroughbred, many of the eventing legends were sired by one of these two giants. Other thoroughbred sport horse stallions listed include King's Composer, Another Hoarwithy, Welton Gameful, More Pokey, Primative Rising and Criminal Law just to name a few!

Showjumpers are more more likely to be fashionable warmbloods than thoroughbreds these days but that doesn't mean they have been passed over completely, Pat Smyth had an exracehorse and American showjumper Nona Garson rode her Russian bred thoroughbred Rhythmical as part of the American Oympic Team in 2000.

There are many thoroughbred dressage horses and I find more and more as I have researched for this website.  Even endurance(Scartho Top, Pembridge Place(below)) and showing (Millimetre) contain exracehorses enjpoying a more interesting and gymnastic change of pace!

Thoroughbreds have contribuited to many bloodlines and have often used to improve quality. Argentinian polo ponies are a combination of Criollo and Thoroughbred. It would appear from my forays on the web that most South African polo ponies are thoroughbred!  The most important characteristics required for polo are speed, agility and courage, qualities thoroughbreds have in abundance.  Check out the featured horses on the Retraining of Racehorses website and find the favourites of Roddy Williams and Henry Brett.

I have never seen a driven ex-racehorse in the UK and lets face it, they do not have the reputation for the calm and accepting type usually associated with driving.  However, take a look at the link below and perhapes afterwards you may be tempted to have a go yourself!
