Western Front 2000

Western Front Snapshots - 2000

I took a camera on a visit to the Somme in the summer of 2000, some photographs appear in the text of the website, but too many slow things down. For those of you who are interested I have uploaded a selection, grouped by area or battle. I hope you find them interesting and informative.

Amiens, the capital city of the Somme department.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame was surrounded by, and filled with, sandbags during the Great War. The first picture shows the exterior and the second the nave, the tallest in France.

Inside the Cathedral, as in twenty-seven other of France and Belgium's great churches, is a CWGC memorial plaque commemorating the Commonwealth war dead who fell in the Great War. The Amiens plaque, however, bears only the Royal Coat of Arms and is dedicated to British and Irish casualties, as the war dead of the Dominions are commemorated separately. The plaque in Nantes cathedral is shown for comparison.

Bullecourt, the first section shows the grave sites of Geoffrey Hardy and his comrades at Achiet-le-Grand and the HAC Cemetery at Ecoust St-Mein.

The next section shows five views of the old battlefield.

Finally a couple of pictures taken in the village.

Guillemont in the southern sector of the Somme battlefield is where 55th Division fought its first action.
