Known locally as Ellan Vannin and known as
devil's island in the corridors of Whitehall, this small independent country is situated in the Irish sea. It has a population of about 75 000 and is 32 miles long and 13 wide. The landscape is rich and varied with mountains, glens, fells and 100 miles of coast line. The Island boasts the oldest continual parliament in the world, Tynwald. It was introduced by the vikings and is now into it's second millenium! The island is a
favourite haunt of train enthusiasts because it's rail system is steam. Many of our open roads have no speed limits. Although the Island has never been a member of the United Kingdom the English government is responsible for the Island's defence. The Island is not a member of the E.C. although trade agreements are in place. The Island has more golf courses
(per head) than the Costa Del Sol and is a favourite destination for many golfers. There are currently nine courses on the Island, two of which have championship status. |
