Another Welshman in the Saints side, related to David Hughes through a distant grand-ewe. A career spanning Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea has truly reached its peak in the red and white of Southampton. Since arriving at the Dell, Hughes has been instrumental in introducing the Chelsea squad rotation system to team selection; chiefly by being suspended for every other game.

Update Jan 2000 : Disciplinary problems are now a thing of the past (the old legs can't carry him around quite so much as before). In keeping with others of yesterday's heroes, he will eventually make the permanent move into the twilight of non-league football as Wales manager. For the time being, he has committed himself to continuing his job at Southampton, f***ing up any hope of us playing two strikers simultaneously.

Update April 2000 : A sad day. . for Everton. . . as the veteran turns a Toffee striker shortage drama into a crisis. Such is the style of the player that when he left The Dell, he was one yellow card away from suspension. Then in his first game for Everton he gets booked and deflects the ball past his own keeper. . . .
