The Honey's 1830-1863

William Honey

William Honey was the first in my tree to migrate to London. William was baptised on the 13th of April 1823 at Mereworth parish church, pictured left. I do not have too much information on William, his parents were Richard and Mary Honey who lived in a hamlet just outside Mereworth called New Pound. William would have moved to London around 1845-1850. As agricultural work in the rural areas became less labour intensive many young men moved to the cities to find work, in this case the docks. William settled in Bethnal Green and lived for some time in Hare Street, now redeveloped. On the 11th of January 1857 William married Mary Elizabeth Mardon, a clock makers daughter also of Hare Street. They were married at St Phillips Church Bethnall Green. A point to note is their ages at the time of the marriage, William was 34 and Mary was 30 which was quite late to be getting married during this period. They were also living at the same address at the time of the wedding which was quite common. contrary to popular belief. I have searched to see if William had been married previously but have not yet found any proof. Under Construction
