Former cavalry officer James Hewitt commanded A Squadron of the Scots Guards
during the 1991 Gulf War. After retiring from the army as a Captain, he was
rewarded for his service with the title of Major.
James has
an impressive sporting record. He excelled at the age of 13 across a variety
of sports and went on to gain a gold survival badge. While serving in the
British army, James continued to pursue his interest in riding and recently
appeared on Channel 4's, The Games.
Since his
infamous affair with Princess Diana came to the public's attention, the former
army officer has rarely been out of the spotlight. But his relationship with
the Princess has tended to overshadow his impressive achievements on the
battlefield.
Hewitt served in the British Army for 17 years. After passing through
Sandhurst in 1979, he received training in a variety of army disciplines,
including battle tanks, parachuting and ceremonial duties. With such an
impressive repertoire of skills under his belt, Hewitt went on to command A
Squadron of the Scots' Guards during the 1991 Gulf War and was widely praised
for his courage and leadership.
However, it was during the early nineties that Hewitt found himself in the
public eye after a five-year affair with Princess Diana. The affair ended in
1992, and Hewitt caused a stir when he decided to collaborate on the book,
Princess in Love, which contained intimate details of his relationship with
the Princess. Further details of their affair were revealed in his 1997
autobiography, Love and War.
