The Characters

Anyone who has read any of Jilly's Rutshire novels will have fallen in love with at least one of the characters. We want several of the men to whisk us off to bed and to be a dazzling cocktail of the most delicious parts of all the women. My particular favourites: Rupert Campbell-Black: How could anyone not want to know him? Despite being the most apalling bastard most of the time, he is HUGELY entertaining and utterly admirable, even though we hate ourselves for loving him. Luke Alderton: Take me now. Handsome, literate, kind, forthright, gentle, oh how I envy Fen!!! Taggie Campbell-Black: You have to admire her - as time has gone on she's become really quite forceful in times of strife, and, let's face it, there are quite a few. Bless her and little Gertrude (shockingly sticky end she came to - I was gutted) Declan O'Hara: There's no stopping him, and I utterly adore any episodes involving him, Rupert & a bottle of whisky......

The 6 Novels

Riders: Meet Rupert and his cronies as Olympic dreams, Olympic-size sexual liaisons and utterly depraved social acts come & go, with good old Rupes coming out on top. Viva the wife-swapping '70s. Rivals: Enter Declan & his gorgeous family. TV tangle ensues with Rupert's political, media and personal lives all going on a jolly old roller-coaster. Jolly cat-fights, lots of parties & a storming franchise bid. Rupe triumphs again. Polo: Men, animals, Argentinian high-jinx, Californian glamour, far too many helicopters, Perdita's life from school to marriage & beyond (via various scandels, country-fleeing and sexual liaisons), oh, and a touch of polo. The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous: And how he did. Gentle giant finds love in arms of Rannaldini's 4th wife, after much shagging of practically every other woman in Paradise and a long affaire with an aging pop star. Super tennis match at Valhalla. Appassionata: Orchestral manoeuvers in the dark, the daylight and foreign climbs. Violinist virtuosso finds love in arms of horny horn player and aging pop star's daughter winds up with older, adorable, property fiend. Score: Toodle-oo Rannaldini. Whodunn it, him & others, amid filming of opera by strong, silent Frenchman. Spooks galore, and Hermione's bum takes what could be it's final curtain call. Little Cosmo steals the show!

So what do you all think of Score! ?

I found the first 50 pages or so of Score! rather hard-going; a tad too much detail on the opera front and not enough of the characters we know and love. The new characters I found very two-dimensional and not at all as appealing as the old ones, nor did I feel at all compelled to warm to them. I found myself yearning for more of Taggie, Rupert and Declan. Once Rannaldini was dead, part of the appeal died. Tristan was, frankly, not interesting enough, the sexual encounters were boring and little Cosmo was the only ray of light.

So go on, then - who disagrees?!!!!!

I should point out, though, that it was still a pretty good read, if only because the threat of Rupert & Tab reappearing every couple of pages kept me turning. There was also the nigling need to know whodunnit - quite scary towards the end!!!! Please leave comments in the guestbook & I shall update the page a lot more when I've got more time on my hands.

Thanks for reading!
