Lucas Radebe's form during the '98/'99 season was, as ever, commanding and was integral to Leeds achievement of fourth place that season - despite the fact that he often had to play for club and country within a matter of a few days, with only sleep during travel to refresh him. In order for us to best see the effect that he has on Leeds as a team, we must compare how well the club has done both with him in the team and during his absence.

It is possible to draw various conclusions by paralleling the data, but it may be wiser to focus on the end totals. While it is not possible to directly generalize from one set of data to the other - since variables such as the number of matches played and the quality of the opposition need to be taken into account - we can make some assumptions based on the information above.
As regards proportion of clean sheets, for example, we may safely say that the majority of Leeds clean sheets have been kept when Lucas has played - the Whites have kept clean sheets in 44.4% of the games that Lucas has played in, as opposed to only 23.1% when he has not played (in the '98/'99 season). From this we may reasonably assume that Lucas does not only add stability to the defence, he adds solidity (as reflected by the greater proportion of clean sheets kept).
We also won a greater proportion of the games in which Radebe played than when he was not in action (47.2% in comparison with 38.5%), and the statistics indicate that we are also more likely to draw than lose with Lucas in the team. Leeds lost just 16.7% of the 36 games in which Lucas played (as opposed to the 38.5% of the 13 games they played without him). Indeed, Leeds lost just 6 times in 36 games when Lucas has played, whereas they lost on 5 occasions during the 13 games where he was not present.
