James Van Der Beek was born March 8, 1977 in Cheshire, CT. Fate certainly played a hand in his entrance into the acting world. At 13 he obtained a mild concussion and was not permitted to play football that year. So, he decided to audition for the school play, "Grease", he landed the lead role as Danny Zuko. Bitten by the acting bug, he continued to do children's theatre in his hometown. At 16 he was still interested in acting so his mother agreed to let him travel the three hours each way to New York city in order for him to pursue acting professionally. While he landed an agent and a manager on their very first visit, he didn't find much success auditiong for commercials. The next year, he appeared in the Off-Braodway play, "Finding the Sun",which was written and directed by Edward Albee. He describes this as a defining experience for him as an actor, and commuted six hours every day during the limited three-month run for rehearsals and performances in the middle of high school. After that experiance, he starred in "Shenandoah" at the Goodspeed Opera House. His on-screen debut came in "Angus" where he played (ironically) a mean jock, and then he went on to star in " I Love You...I Love You Not" with Claire Danes. Last Summer, he completed the independant feature film "Harvest". One of his latest films "Varsity Blues" sees him cast alongside Jon Voight as Coch Bud Kilmer who is in his 35th year of coaching and is trying to lead his West Canaan Coyotes to their 23rd division title. When star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker) suffers an injury, the Coyotes are forced to regroup under the questionable leadership of John Moxom (James Van Der Beek), a second-string quarterback with a slightly irreverent approach to the game. Another recent film is "Castle In the Sky" where he is the voice of "Pazu". The story is about a young boy who meets a girl with a history that is intertwined with his own. The two are thrown into one of the most fun and intriguing storylines in any animated film. There is also, "Texas Ranger" in which a ragtag group of youngsters band together after the American Civil War to form the Texas Rangers, a group charged with the dangerous, ruthless duty of cleaning up the West. This means period costumes for James- think cowboy hats, chaps and spurs. Finally, the movie "Mystery Alaska" is a story of a fictional town in the cradle of hockey, and for decades the toughest men have played in the weekly ritual called the Saturday game. Spoiling the adrenalized Eden is a journalist, whose Sports Illustrated cover story about Mystery brings the New York Rangers to town for a corporation-sponsored exhibition game. An amateur hockey team from small town Alaska takes on the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. This comedy is about the residents of a small town who get over-excited when their hockey team gets chosen to host a televised event. James is a dean's list student who recieved an academic scolarship from Drew University in Madison, N.J., where he majors in English with a minor in sociology. In what little free time he has, he enjoys writing and playing all kinds of sports.
Dawson Leery is the teenager who has it all- he just doesn't know it, of course, over the period of the first two series he kinda lost it all; his parents divorced and he lost his best friend. Dawson is probably the biggest Speilberg fan there is and he lives constantly in his own movie-dream-world, completely oblivious to the life going on around him. His dream is to be a director and his horror film one him a prize at the Boston Film Festival, unfortunately the follow up film is not doing so well. His on-and-off relationship with Joey Potter provides turmoil for Dawson. We spent the whole first series waiting for 'that kiss' and the whole second series waiting for Joey to find herself so they could get back together. Unfortunately it's never that simple for Dawson and Joey so you can bet they'll be more trouble ahead for them.
