THE MEN OF PACOCHA

Above, a picture of Nicolás de Pierola, who lead the revolution against President Prado and rejected the ultimatum of British Rear Admiral de Horsey to surrender his ship. Pierola lost the revolution but two years later he became President of Perú. At the center, Peruvian Captain Juan Guillermo Moore, commander of the Independencia, which fought against the Huascar at Pichalo, few days before the encounter between Huascar and HMS Shah and HMS Amethyst. Moore´s ship, a central battery ram hulled frigate, was defeated by the incredible Huascar despite she was twice as big. At the bottom is Peruvian Captain German Astete, who together with the Carrasco brothers directed the fight of the Peruvian ironclad against the British ships.
