In April 2003 I went to Venice again and I was struck by the profusion of rainbow-coloured flags/posters saying the single word "PACE" (peace). As someone opposed to the US and UK governments' war on Iraq, I was thrilled that so many Italians were willing to show in public that they support Peace. The Grand Canal and many small streets were filled with these colourful flags of hope.
