Ewhurst Parish registers have listed a John BURGESS who was buried on 6 Oct 1773. Suspect this may be John's father.

The three known children of John BURGESS (436) and Sarah MUNN (437) were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Thomas BURGESS (402) was born in 1773 in Ewhurst. He was christened on 15 December 1774 in the Parish of St James Church, Ewhurst. He married Mary DAWS (403), daughter of William DAWS (529) and Hannah (--?--) (530), on 23 February 1802 Ewhurst by licence. He died on 8 April 1835 Ewhurst at age 60 and was buried in the Parish Churchyard with a gravestone by the fence opposite the West door.

Thomas ran the parish Butcher's business in Ewhurst and his house and one acre of land were part of a tenement called 'Fishers'. The shop faced Ewhurst Green and the Parish Church. His field for holding stock was adjacent to Snaggs Hall. He left a will on 12 February 1822 which has been transcribed in full.

She and Elias TAYLOR (407) lived in Western Road, Brighton, although Elias is described as from Patcham in the Will of Henry BURGESSl.

  • iv. Thomas BURGESS (408) was christened on 16 February 1807 in the Parish of St James', Ewhurst. He married Ann RICHARDSON (752) on 2 May 1822 Ewhurst. As Thomas would only have been 15 years old this may not be the correct Thomas but there was some sort of rift that caused Thomas to emigrate to America and it may have been this.

She married William CLARK (439), son of Edward CLARK (440), on 23 November 1844 St James', Ewhurst, he signed his name but she signed with her mark *. This may be the wrong Hannah as she is stated as being only 18 on the marriage record when in fact this Hannah is 22.

Henry, his brother, describes him as 'late' in his will of 1866.

He was listed in the 1837 Poll Book for East Sussex. His right to vote was because he had land as occupier Brosses-farm Ewhurst although he did not actually vote. He was employed as a butcher, in his fathers shop, as indicated in the Parish Registers at the baptisms of his eldest children but by the 1851 census he had become a farmer at Mockbeggar, Playden. He was recorded in the 30 March 1851 census at Mock Beggar Farm House, Playden. He was aged 49, a Farmer of 100 acres employing 3 and his wife, Fanny aged 34. Their children are named as Fanny (10), Eliza M (7) and Edgar (5) were also on the 1851 census but not Alfred who must therefore have died before this time. Charles is not listed either and it might be assumed that he was away at boarding school. Also living with them are 3 servants and a governess. He was on the census of 7 April 1861. In addition to Fanny his wife (46), Thomas H (22), Fanny (20), Elizabeth M (18), Kate (9), Sarah Jane (7) and Edward (3) but no Edgar or Charles, there is a servant called Fanny Bryant (20) of Brede, SSX. His occupation is Farmer and Hop Grower employing six men on 100 acres. By the 1871 Census, John and Fanny are no longer at Mockbeggar Farm. It is now occupied by Henry Elliott who was born in Northiam, his wife Mary and their two children Lucy and William all born in Rolvenden.
